Experience switching from Max Hub to a third party router (Max Hub sucks)

I switched from Virgin Media to SKY Gigafast about 6 months ago. I noticed since switching that it had problems on a few sites. YouTube will sometimes stop preloading a video which causes it to buffer occasionally. It also sometimes stops loading Instagram videos until I refresh. It happens on more than one device

I've been using the Max Hub this whole time but I switched to an ASUS RT AX57 and it has been much better. I have it setup to stay on one WiFi channel and use Quad9 DNS for both IPV4 and IPV6. For whatever reason, SKY have locked down the Max Hub firmware to the point I can't change the DNS server nor force a WiFi channel to stick to. It doesn't even let you split the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands. I don't care about the synchronization nonsense, give us the option.

With the ASUS router I no longer get buffering problems in YouTube and Instagram. Webpages feel like they load faster. The signal goes further. Overall it's a much better setup than the Max Hub. I don't know if it's because of some "smart" traffic management, Sky's default DNS having issues, or the router just struggling with multiple devices connected, but a third party router is far better for stability and signal distance.

SKY also only use DHCPv4 Option 61 which limits third party router options but ASUS works a treat. Kind of annoying SKY do this when almost every other ISP use standard authentication that all modern routers support.

If any of you are curious how to set it up, all you do is leave the WAN in Automatic IP mode and type anything@skydsl|anything in the Option 61 line. Where it says "anything" you can literally write whatever you want. Make sure you use | . Change DNS server to whichever you prefer.

@RB9 glad to hear you solved the issues that concerned you. Only roughly 5% of Sky's customers use a third party router but as you have found they can be pretty easy to set up. Asus are a popular choice due to their support for DHCPv4 Option61 and there are walk throughs for most models on the forum.  If any one gets stuck just search for the model you prefer.
