Expected Full Fibre speeds

Hi All,

I recently got Sky Full fibre installed to my house in Dublin 12. The fibre is running on Virgin Media's wholesale network and all is good with that.

I am noticing that my "true speed" isn't exactly what I would have expected and I'm wondering what people's "true download" speed is generally like on a 1Gb connection?

My equipment:

1. Virgin Media wholsale ONT connected via CAT6 10GB into my UCG Fibre (Unifi Cloud Gateway Fibre) - physical link speed is 10GB

2. UCG device internal speed test directly to the fibre = 926MB down, 112MB up

3. My desktop PC connected to the UCG via a 2.5GB network adapter (link speed is 2.5Gb)

4. Speed test results are very, very stable at 920MB down, 110MB up.

5. Unifi Access Point on WiFi7 via a 2.5G PoE port (Link speed is again 2.5Gb)

6. OnePlus phone on WiFi7; link speed 1.8Gb on average

7. WiFi speed test results are very, very stable at 920MB down, 110MB up.

I am guessing that Sky are "holding back" 70-80Mb for phone or TV or other services perhaps even though I am hoping to use 100% of the link speed.

What are others getting?

Thanks...

Re: Expected Full Fibre speeds

@newgrove That speed range is fine, there is overheads on the 1GB/s speed so what you have is good!

And for speed related issues good read.

@newgrove simple explanation a link running at 1Gb/s requires roughly 8% of its capacity for network overheads to allow the routing of your data.
