Ethernet connection slower than wifi, how does that make sense?

I've plugged a Cat5e ethernet cable into the sky max hub router and somehow its slower than the wifi

Also the fluctuation of speeds is pretty shocking since we signed up, some days we're getting 55mb then its going down to 40mb. We've recently upgraded to sky max to see if that helped with getting the best speed we can get and its still not great.

I don't understand how the wired connection is slower though, is it worth getting an engineer to the property and we've recently moved in to check the line?

If it's in the UK, putting the address into the BT Wholesale Availability Checker should indicate estimated potential speeds for the location.

https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL/AddressHome

It's the table and the two text lines below it which are most useful.

Remove any personal information (such as the address itself) if you post an image.

As you can see in the figures there, the speeds you are seeing being delivered to the Hub are in the predicted range.  Unfortunately having WiFi Max on the subscription cannot make any difference to the external connection.
