Closer Gaming Servers Have Higher Desync?!

I've no idea if anyone can help with this, but I'm all out of ideas.

I live in Wales, and I'm on Sky (fibre to the property). When I'm gaming online playing DayZ (PC), a range of EU-based servers give me horrendous desync / lag. And yet servers much further away, like in North America, are absolutely fine.

I've played seamlessly via WiFi for years, and I thought WiFi may be the issue as there can be interference of course, but as I say, it's not all servers. Further servers offer no issues at all, while on closer servers it's horrendous.

I'm assuming it's something to do with how packets are being routed (or not), but why would it be worse with servers I'm so closer to? And what on Earth can be done to test/fix it? I'm desperate to work this out.

@Senseitional it is worth doing a trace route to both your problem European servers and the US servers as it is quite likely to be a routing issue. Sky usually have excellent pairing arrangements but some areas can be a problem. Not much if anything you can do about the routing Sky uses but using a VPN might help.

Re: Closer Gaming Servers Have Higher Desync?!

@Chrisee Hey, I really appreciate your reply. It's so frustrating, I wish I didn't switch to Sky now, honestly.

Regarding traceroute, what am I looking for? I've completed one for both and the US IP took longer of course. Yet both had 'request timed out' in the hops and there was nothing super different between them. If anything it looks like the EU response was better. Also ping to the EU servers isn't a problem, it's well below 100ms, which is why it's so confusing. It looks like it should work fine, but it just doesn't in practice.

I'll try a trial for a VPN too, thanks.

@Chrisee Quick update: VPN doesn't work, since I got an "Admin Kick - VPN Detected" warning.

I feel like the only thing left is to leave Sky, unless there is another way to resolve the issues somehow.

@Senseitional check the setting for Broadband Shield in My Sky as that can block VPN traffic if set to too retrictive a level.

Re: Closer Gaming Servers Have Higher Desync?!

@Chrisee Thanks. The 'Admin Kick' I got was from the game server I joined; so I'm not sure if that would be impacted by Shield?

However, I will try to modify Shield Settings, and see if that impacts things positively regardless 👍

@Senseitional realised thst just after posting. Have you checked the forums for the servers as you cant be the only player from the UK using Sky given they are one of the three largest isps in the country.

Re: Closer Gaming Servers Have Higher Desync?!

@Chrisee I have asked for feedback on this, so I will see what happens. The current sample of one (a chap who lives in Northern Ireland) isn't giving me much to go on 😅 but he said he had no issues.

Have you fixed this. I can't get on dayz now either. I'm on ps5. Just nothing works.
