Can I get backup WIFI for Sky?

Hi all

We have openreach who Sky use for our broadband. However the local openreach exchange always seem to have issues and this time it'd lasted 7 days without WIFI broadband. So I am thinking of looking into some kind of backup WIFI and wondering if anyone can recommend anything? Something we can use to connect our Sky Q box to and my wife's work from home computer and kids tablets etc?

I was going to switch to Vodaphone or another cityfibre but have heard loads of horrible stories about Vodaphone not connecting well to the sky Q box so think aill just try and find some kind of a back up? Anyone help for what I am looking for? Thanks all

@Nicepattern currently Sky do not offera mobile fallback option on their domestic services butvdo onntheir products for small business. If you wanted to use a mobile servicecas a back up it would have to be via a standalone mobille router.

Currently it's BT/EE which offers automated failover to cellular data as an (extra cost) option on domestic broadband: I have that here, and it's gone into action a couple of times with no-one noticing, so must be doing it right..

Re: Can I get backup WIFI for Sky?

Thanks, wouldn't that basically juat be the same as me using my mobile hit spot on my phone to connect to my sky q box?

The BT/EE solution is a separate device with a built-in SIM connected to the Hub that automatically takes over the connection if the broadband goes down (although obviously at lower bandwidth if going from FTTP to 4G)

Re: Can I get backup WIFI for Sky?

Thanks.

Do I have to be a BT/EE customer to get the BT/EE solution device?

Or can I still get it being a Sky customer and if so how do I get it?

@Nicepattern you would need to switch your service to EE to get their hub with fall back to mobile.

Sky Business Broadband offers cellular failover through a rather inelegant solution (D-Link USB cellular stick in the back of the Business Hub)

Mind you, with BT switching their domestic branding to EE, unfortunately the new EE Hub and cellular module are unforgivably ugly...

Where the previous BT version was rather elegant (left to right that's the 4G module, Smart Hub 2, and 'Whole Home' booster disk)

Sky still doesn't offer automated failover to cellular data on their domestic broadband service.

Re: Can I get backup WIFI for Sky?

You could also buy your OWN:
- Modem (if you use VDSL2 = FTTC)
- Router
- AP's = Access Points to cover your place with Wi-Fi
- 4G/5G back up solution

insted of paying extorsionate monthly fees for any of the above from the likes of Sky/BT/EE etc.  😉

4G/LTE / WiFi = cAP LTE12 ax
 [removed]
5G/NR / WiFi =Chateau 5G R17 ax
[removed]

or
5G/NR FWA = ZTE MC888A Ultra or MC888 Ultra
 [removed]

You will be free to choose which SIM to put inside and use ...
