Cable from ONT to Hub query?

Hi guys,

I'm having Sky UltraFast Plus installed in a couple of weeks. As I understand it, OpenReach will install an ONT at one point of my property & sky will connect their hub to this?

My issue is, my current phone line comes in to the garage, and this is where the ONT will be, then my hub is in a media cupboard in the middle of the house.

I'm assuming the sky engineer will need to run a cable from the ONT to my sky hub? If so, I'd rather do this myself, and just get him to tail them up thereafter.

Is it just Cat5e that's needed between the 2, and will they be happy to tail up some RJ45s to the Cat5e?

Or anything else I should be expecting?

The Sky/Openreach engineer will not run the cable all the way from the ONT to where your hub sits now they will ask you to move the hub closer. You can certainly run you own cable yes it would be CAT5e minimum you'd need to run from the ONT.

Also worth noting that on the day you may be able to ask Openreach to bring the fibre in & install the ONT in a more convenient place.

Re: Cable from ONT to Hub query?

Thanks for this @jamesn123 ,

I'll run some Cat5e in from where the ONT will be to the hub cupboard.

do the sky engineers have rj45 connectors and the tools to fit these? Or do they typically want to use premade Ethernet's?

thanks again

No i dont think they have the tools to crimp cables, they will be wanting to use the premade ethernet cable that you should get in the post from Sky before your activation day.

@jamesn123

Ah ok, I might just buy a 15/20m cat6 patch lead and route that in then.

at least then it's just plugging each end in.

thanks again

Yeah if you have the means to route a premade cable I would recommend doing that certainly.
