Broadband issue...

Hi everyone, i'm having an issue with my broadband that i'm wondering if anyone can help me with, Sky themselves are useless....

My PC is running on full Cat 6, with a Gigabyte connection....

I had 150mb Broadband and was receiving around 147mb download speeds on average and all was good. I've recently upgraded to Sky 500 and my download speed has jumped from 147 average to an impressive 160 average 🙄.... we are now over the 2 weeks "settling in" period also.

If I log onto my router and change the Ethernet setup from Gigabyte ethernet to Fast ethernet, wait for the router to reboot, change it back to Gigabyte ethernet and wait on the router rebooting again, i'm consistently getting above 400mb downloads for a whole 10 minutes before it drops back down again to 160 average. This is happening every single time I try the same process..... (My daily average speed to the router, according to Sky is 400+)

Now my quadary is... If i'm getting 400+ after an internal router reboot, it proves the cabling is ok, the connections are ok and the PC's Lan port is ok... (i've also installed the latest drivers for that) Would we all agree there's something not quite right with the router itself? Or has anyone else got any ideas?

Thanks in advance....

Re: Broadband issue...

@Jacko2110 There is NO 2 week settling in period on a FF speed upgrade, moving from 150-500 once applied by sky it is a virtual instant speed change, Network is a shared resource, and a couple of things to need to do, If you know that the network in your home is quite at the time, speed test with at least another server, i use the wildcard networks as my primary for the basis, various times need to be checked, to ensure that you have the picture to what is going on, you can also look at the PC Resource monitor or task manager to see that the pc is not busy, if you have a high cpu or low in ram those can have a hugh effect with the PC performance alone, another device normally proves that is happenibg. Few ideas for you to try.... Few speed test links below.

And for speed related issues good read.

Re: Broadband issue...

Hi Jim,

Tried multiple servers, same results....

I always test at night so the network is not busy both at home and netwrok wide.

I'm running a 5900x, 64gb of RAM.. there's no way running a speed test is taxing my PC, and that wouldn't account for the DL running at 400+ and then dropping to 160-180 average after 5-10minutes of an internal router reboot every time....

I'll need to get onto Sky, i'm not paying extra for an average extra of 20-30mb of download, if they can't solve my issue...

Aprreciate the input though, thanks

Pre reboot test, with machine performance.....1.png

Internal router reboot...

Download speed after reboot with machine performance.....

After roughly 3-5 minutes every time it will cap the speed to around 160-180+....

Test results on a server cycle showing the result before the internal reboot, the gap in time whilst doing the internal reboots after changing settings mentioned above and changing back. It also shows when the router is deciding to cap the speed. I've now done this test about 10x and the same results every time.....

It's all pointing towards the Router for me....

Re: Broadband issue...

@Jacko2110 As you are 100% convinced that the SR203 router is the issue, what is your bypass speed test producing when direct connected?

Re: Broadband issue...

Hi Jim,

I'm not convinced by anything, hence why i'm here...

I've been an Engineer for 25yrs, (not IT though) I personally done all the internal wiring of the house and built the PC, they've all been tested vigorously and all tests were pointing towards the Router being the possible cause, that's why I was making that assertation....

I did manage to eventually get a hold of someone from Sky today. They tested the router and have said they could see a massive drop off in speed. They're sending me a new router out, have also upgraded me to Gigafast cheaper than I was getting the Sky500 for due to the inconvenience, so we'll see how that goes. So far, win win.....

Re: Broadband issue...

@Jacko2110 You are going about it all the right way, could be an oops on the SR203, just never seen it on mine with the FF500 connection, ocassional speed hit but really zero to worry about, now put the SR and SE away back in the boxes, during there 10 week check all was good.

Did load the sky network up last couple off weeks with more direct connections but it held it's own.

You should look to get the PC direct on the ONT as another testing, just eliminates the router if you get the same reults.
