Broadband Scam?

Just had a call from a phone number which told me that upgrades were being done to the fibre in my area and that I can upgrade if I would like. I gave them my name, current address, phone number, email and last two digits of my account number for my online bank until I realised after that it was phishy. The number is linked to broadband scams so now I am concerned on what they can do with this information and how I can make sure my accounts stay safe.

More help can be found here:

https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-scams-help

You should also change your Sky online password:

https://skyid.sky.com/resetpassword/

And  I would also change the email address you have registered with your account:

https://www.sky.com/mydetails/account-info

You also need to watch out for devices being ordered via your account as per this:

https://www.sky.com/help/articles/account-takeover

If you receive an unexpected parcel from Sky get in touch with our customer services team immediately. We can give advice on what to do. Don’t send the parcel anywhere except our returns address.

We’ll give you pre-paid returns packaging to send the parcel back to us.

Re: Broadband Scam?

@j434 It's possible this was a genuine call.

If you are currently a Sky customer paying by direct debit, you may have been asked to confirm the last two digits of the bank account so the caller could match this to your direct debit to confirm your identity.

As a former bank employee I'm not sure what use the last two digits of your bank account is to a fraudster. I certainly wouldn't be rushing to cancel my bank card, you've not divulged any information that would allow anyone to access your bank account via your bank card.

It might be worth giving Sky a ring to see if, in fact, fibre upgrades are available to you, before contacting anyone else to report a scam .

EDIT:

@caesarome beat me to it! I still think cancelling your bank card at this stage is premature!

Sky don't  ask for bank details  of any sort if you are a customer they ask you to verify  if you are the account holder , name  then for the password  on the account  they already  have your  payment details on the system

If they were offering  a broadband  upgrade  they have all your  information  already  if you have  an account  with  them  for broadband and would stay  on the phone  and take you through your  upgrade options and definitely  not ask for the last two  digits  of your bank card

@peter-marlow+1966 This is not my experience ! You said in an earlier reply on this thread that Sky would ask for your account password, they will never do this... they will ask for your telephone PIN or password, which is completely different.

When I phoned Sky  on behalf of my father, (he was with me at the time) he didn't have a telephone password, so they verified he was the account holder by asking him for the last two digits of the bank account that the Sky direct debit was paid from. We then had a conversation resulting in him downgrading his subscription.

I would be careful giving advice to fellow customers on this forum which is not completely accurate.

Ok I  have never heard of that sorry  if I  am wrong but the password  is for your account  so maybe if sky had phoned and ask to verify the account  holder  details  with name and password, and she could not remember, I  have been asked  to verify  my postcode  and my email address maybe I  have been watching to scam interceptors  programmes

When you phone sky the automated system  ask you to verify  you are  the account holder, and then says please verify  your  password  if you don't  know  it just say don't  know to get your account  details  up, I  have  been  with  sky  over 18 years  and have never been ask for the last two digits  of  my  bank card  for verification

Sky should ask the caller the telephone password that has previously been agreed with the account holder.

If one hasn't previously been agreed Sky will have other means to verify the callers authenticity .

You setup  the password  or you used to when you setup  your  account  with  sky, my password  is the same for my tv account, broadband account and mobile phone  account  and has been  for the past 18 years once you have verified  your details  over the automated system  and you get to talk to an advisor they normally  just double check  that information  and then open  your  account

I would be worried  that that number  was not from sky as when I  have been  call by sky about sky mobile  upgrades the person  who has called  me as said  their name to me they  were from sky mobile told me my name told me what I  have and never asked me to verify  anything when they have called  me, if you ring the number  back and it is sky the message  will  says one of our department  tried to contact  you  sorry  we missed you we will try  again later
