Broadband 900 speed problem

Was wondering if anyone can assist.

I had the fibre 900 installed last week and I was told that I would get a minimum guarantee speed of 600.

and I do understand that the year speeds fluctuate in the first 10 days or so but I am consistently only getting at the max 300 which also drops down when there are a couple of devices connected.

I can get this increased to over 500 but that is during early mornings and when only one device is connected.

I contacted the sky broadband Help and they said that everything is fine and there isn't any issues and the speed that I am getting is between 700 and 800 to the hub.

so not sure what to do here and was wondering if anybody can assist or provide further advice and information

.

@Qamar

How are you measuring the speed? On what device and how is it connected to the hub?

Note that the 600mbps figure Sky quote is only over ethernet, not WiFi.

@Qamar

Could you please post a screenshot of the test?

I would also ask you to check for any background processes running on the laptop e.g. updates downloading, files uploading etc.

Re: Broadband 900 speed problem

I am not sure how to do a screenshot from the laptop so I will do the speed test from my iPhone and do a screenshot and send it to you now.

I understand this might not be as accurate as Internet, but I will try and sort that out later once I know how to.

@Qamar

A speed test on a wireless device is largely 'testing' the local WiFi: as I frequently post, it will be zero Mbs on the other side of a few walls.

Re: Broadband 900 speed problem

I think I might have found out part of the problem.

A while ago, there was a lot of pixelating and buffering on what I was streaming. So I did the speed test again and it was less than 20.

I changed the wireless channel on the hub from Auto to 7 and checked speed again. This time it went above 550.

How can I find out what might be affecting the WiFi channel? Is there something I can do to distinguish what device or what something is causing this?

@Qamar you cannot control which channels your neighbour's networks use so if that is the problem be prepared to change the 2.4GHz channel pretty regularly. However such a dramatic increase implies the source coukd be in your home assuming you dont have any third party WIFi extenders or a second router.  It can be a device that uses a wireless signal like a speaker or headphone system. Bluetooth devices can cause interference but they are very low power so that is doubtful. These devices use thecsame 2.4GHz band as WiFi but dont change frequencies so yourcswitch should still work but keep any suspect units away from your hub.

Sky hubs are dualbandcand most bandwidth uses the 5GHz band which is less affected by interference larlgely because it has less range. Higher frequencies suffer greater signal loss passing through solid objects so making sure the signal has the best path tomyour device helps a lot - the hub should be out in the open not on the floor or behind things.
