Big increase in data usage

I was looking at my data usage stats and noticed a huge jump last month.

To the best of my knowledge, our broadband usage was nothing unusual last month.  How can I work out what has caused this spike in data?

The connection is only used by my wife, myself and a few smart devices like the Sky Q box - but nothing unusual happened last month compared to the previous 12 months and as you can see the rest of the year averages out at 164Gb.

Also, how do I find out if this extra activity has continued into May?

@Ian+M+ButterfieldI take it you are on an unlimited data plan for your broadband?

Re: Big increase in data usage

I believe so - that's not the worry - the worry is what device is causing it and is it having an impact on the network?

Re: Big increase in data usage

Not downloading anything more than usual and nothing in 4K, UHD as we don't have a 4K screen!

Sorry - my replies are clear as to who they are directed to - wasn't aware that the 'reply' didn't reference the original post.

@highlander - I believe I am on unlimited - but worry about what is causing it and the affect it might be having on the network

@NickNewark - Not downloading anything more than normal (if anything slightly less in April) and certainly nothing on UHD or 4K as we don't have 4K screen.

@Ian+M+Butterfield

Its possible you just streamed or downloaded more on Sky Q this month. Or possibly one of your devices has been doing more cloud backups/downloads. I really would not worry about it. 600gb per month isnt huge.

Re: Big increase in data usage

@jamesn123 - with no change to our viewing habits I think downloading/streaming is unlikely to be the cause - as we would see similar figures in the rest of the year.  I'm not worried about the quantity of data - I am worried about not being able to explain why one month should be over four times higher than average.

Anyone, able to tell me how to dig deeper into these stats?  If I can identify which device is responsible I can then check to make sure the network or the device hasn't been compromised.  (As a bit of background about 15 or 16 years ago I had a machine get hacked and used to send out spam - I've since taken a lot of precautions to ever prevent it from happening again - but it is always a worry, so seeing unusual data amounts starts me worrying).

@Ian+M+Butterfield

I'm afraid there is no tool or mechanism to dig deeper into the stats. The data usage figure is taken from how much data has been processed via the hub, not by individual devices.

You'd need to go onto each device and check its realtime or past network usage to see if its still happening.

Re: Big increase in data usage

I called sky today because my WiFi keeps dropping to less than 5 mbps. The advisor checked everything and noted my usage for November was around 1300g  normal monthly usage is about 300! I have no idea what has caused this. All I have added is a tado smart stat with smart trvs to replace my Nest thermostat. I can believe its this.

Only other thing is iplayer UHD for the world cup games and occasional TV show.

Any ideas.

Just for information, at its nominal 24Mbs iPlayer in UHD brings in about 10GB of data an hour.
