@Louise367  As I posted earlier when it makes the noise have you tried switching it off to see of it stops?  If it stops it's the ONT, if it doesn't it's not.

PS cancelling Sky and going to another provider will mean they still use the same ONT, net result, no change.

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

I pleased why Sky to send a BT Openreach Engineer about 6 months ago but alas, they sent a TV engineer and naturally when he came round, the box wasn't making the noise so there was nothing he could do.

I tried again this morning and after what felt like an eternity or speaking to every department, I'm no closer to a solution.

the guy in the tech team was like, I've tested your broadband and it's working fine ... and then I politely reminded him that I was trying to report a problem with the box and he said unless there was a problem with the broadband, he couldn't and would book a BT engineer - the whole service is cooked and in shambles and honestly, I've had enough.

@Louise367

Perhaps be aware that any other ISP supplying broadband over the Openreach network would expect to use the same unit.

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

Why would I think to switch it off because then it will interrupt the internet which I need for work?

if anyone knows how I can get a BT engineer to come out and fix this bloody thing, I'm all ears

BT is an ISP in competition with Sky: they aren't relevant in this context.

Openreach is the national network maintainer: it's a division of BT Group but required to operate independently.

The only way to get an Openreach appointment is through Sky, and they would need to be convinced there's a fault with the ONT.

Because if it's unplugged and you still hear the noise, then it's not coming from the box.

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

Surely as a paying customer, when I report a fault, Sky should be like ... sorry to hear that, let us try and help.

instead I get passed from pillar to list and advised that I need to contact Openreach myself and then inevitably when I'm boomeranged back to Sky I'm back at square 1 🤷‍♀️😭

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

There is literally no where else the noice can be coming from.

if it was coming from outside I literally wouldn't hear it as the walls are so thick

We're trying to help you with this issue, if you switch of the ONT when the noise happens and it continues after switching off the ONT then it osn't the ONT.  What have you got to lose?

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

If anyone can think of what I can tell Sky when I call to report the problem again, I'm happy to take suggestions ... quite clearly me saying the box on the walls is emitting an alarm type noise several times per week clearly ain't cutting through - even though that's what's happening

If ONTs don't have speakers, their support scripts won't contain any reference to ONT alarm noise.

instead I get passed from pillar to list and advised that I need to contact Openreach myself

That would be incorrect: only an ISP can book an Openreach visit.

@Louise367  Try the steps suggested before calling Sky as you're likely to just go around in circles again, if you won't try the steps then I don't see what more can be done.

Currently you're fixated on the ONT being the issue when it may not be but you don't seem to want to move away from that assumption.

As both myself & @TimmyBGood  have noted this ONT does not have an internal speak and can't be making the alarm noise.

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

I know you're trying to help but honestly, I'm done in today having spoken to Sky this morning - I honestly would have had more luck banging my head against a brick wall.

fine, then next time it makes the noise and I'm close by, I'll try and figure out how to turn the bloody thing off.

remember, I have no technical ability (I'm am not even joking when I say that and I don't know what all the acronyms / tech jargon means) and don't want to break the broadband because that would be an actual disaster ... but hey, in the absence of any help from Sky, what other choice do I have 🤷‍♀️

Re: BT Openreach Box making a noise

When you say try the steps, are you referring to me turning off the power the next time the box makes the noise?

the good old turn it off turn it on again trick?

Yes, because if it's the ONT then you will know for sure.

You only need to switch the plug  off at the wall, no technical ability needed for that.  White plug/block in a socket with a white lead going to the ONT, red circle denotes cable from the plug.
