Wired and Wireless Setup

So I know this has been discussed ad nausium but for the mini boxes, if there a way to force the TV (and downloads) over the wired connection but still have the mini box act as an access point for WIFI devices.....  Sky broardband not a 3rd party

The issue I have is that one of the mini boxes keeps dropping its connection, and it seems to look like its having a conflic with itself and ends up needing a full reset which takes upwards of 10 mins.......

I want to use the mesh network capability of the mini boxes and the booster, but I have the capability of plugging 1 of the 2 into ethernet so feel it should be better if I do.

Setup is Q box in Lounge hardwired, and a way from the Router.

Mini in bedroom 1 hardwired

mini in bedroom 2 wireless

Booster needed between router and bedroom 2

We are in a bungalow so brick walls and long, hence the booster.

Don't worry about what SSID it's showing you. Just because it shows your broadband SSID on your Sky Q box, doesn't mean its connected by wifi again. The Sky network that joins your boxes together often adopts the name of the first wifi it connected to, it doesn't mean it's connected by wifi.

If it all works, then it works. Don't worry about the SSID you're being shown.

In short, no.  The underlying Airties technology is supposed to route data over the best possible path, but I've never been convinced that it takes ethernet into account.

Re: Wired and Wireless Setup

Agree, but it would be great if they made it so they didnt conflict as well!!!!

Difficult to figure out how the hell the signal could be lost, for TV or the Network, when the device is actually physically connected to the wired network.......

Or is the device in actual fact creating a network loop, becuase the por on the mini box is actually pushing network out and not recieving network in???

@Jellmers

When you connect your mini by ethernet, are you ensuring you don't press WPS when prompted as this overrides the ethernet and reverts to wireless again.

So go to Settings / Setup / Network / Reset, and at step 2 of 4 on screen, DON'T press any WPS buttons. Instead just let it connect on its own which takes around 30 seconds.

As long as you don't then turn off the box's wifi once connected by ethernet, the wifi hot spot on the mini box should still be there.

Re: Wired and Wireless Setup

Just tried it....

Seemed to work and connecting to the original Sky netbios name.

but after about 5 mins reverted to connecting to the WiFi SSID!

grrrrr

why can't companies in the game get anything to just work as it should do....

If no Ethernet then it should get its service from wherever and mesh the network....

If there is Ethernet then defaut inbound traffic over the wire and act as a WiFi access point for the home network...

if you need to be clever then have a setting for access point mode to use the Ethernet port as a connected device like a TV or similar. So being able to provide network to devices that don't have WiFi.

it's quite simple...
