Re: Why do sky put on so many advertisements. We pay to watch programs not adverts
@Chodley Netflix made $2.2 billion profit in the 9 months before September 2020, this is available to download on their investors website. They have $7.9 billion worth of short term debt and another $20 billion long term debt. In total they have $38 billion worth of assets and $28 billion worth of debt so they're in a ok spot.

Correct. I think we are making the same point? At least, now. What happened to "Netflix had income of $1.3 billion this year but their expenses were $3 billion"?
The 1.9 I quoted was 2019, last full annual report. H1 20 was good for them thanks to covid but new subscriber numbers in Q3 a bit disappointing.

@Chodley indeed it seems that we are, after looking into it I'm amazed how missleading some of the Google results are and am so glad that I found the spreadsheet directly from Netflix as it contains some very interesting information although it is rather confusing to read, took me 5 read through a to understand it and I studied business at university lol.

Apologies for repeating myself but Netflix did make a net profit of 1.9billion dollars during 2019. That's a nice profit and no, it hasn't anything to do with fish nets. It does have a lot to do with Netflix though. Lol
Borrowing, is of course a business strategy. Time will tell if it was wise or not, but the costs are included in 'net' as you should know, having done the business course. Lol

But why do they keep advertising their own channels?

The same reason everyone else advertises their products, so people buy them and make the company money

because more eyeballs means higher advertising slot prices for those channels/ shows.

They are advertsing their programs coming on their channels in the same way that ITV, Ch4 and CH5 do. Even the BBC do this all the time so this is hardly anything new.

Illegally, of course, and subject to both blocking by your ISP and punitive action from the rights holders. Similarly you can choose to protest the high prices at your local supermarket by stealing their products too, but you have to accept the potential consequences.
Incidentally, without advertising income or subscription sales, how do you imagine the television content you are consuming will get made in the first place?

@TimmyBGood You just don't get it do you?
Sky charge extortionately and still put on long advertisements as well. Sky want it both ways.
Alternatively, you can stream ITV hub, BBC iPlayer, Netflix, Amazon prime and many other services without any advertisements for a simple cover charge costing far less than Sky charge.
I will be terminating my Sky contract

@brightsereis1 you've missed the point completely. @TimmyBGood was responding to a post about illegal streaming,

Of course you can, and those services will attempt to remain financially viable in different ways: Prime via massive cross subsidy by Amazon, Netflix through borrowing, iPlayer from the British public paying their license fee. My point is that producing and providing content has a cost which someone has to pay (and that @RoaminNL is suggesting simply stealing it instead).

Re: Why do sky put on so many advertisements. We pay to watch programs not adverts
Paying for Sky would be more palatable if they didn't stuff it FULL of ADVERTS, ADVERTS and more ADVERTS..
Sky has a revenue up arouind 20 Billion .. basic salary costs of normal employees maybe only 5% of that.
They've a profit more than the revenue made from advertisements .. so they CAN miss it.
So maybe they can think more of their CUSTOMERS who provide the vast majority of that revenue instead of SHAREHOLDERS... and the vast salaries they pay the top of the corporation.
I can't imagine any person [removed] that LIKES watching adverts ... [removed]
So SKY .. THINK MORE OF YOUR CUSTOMERS !!!

@Mark39 Oh hello.
No I didn't miss the point. I was replying to the second paragraph. I think it would be a nice idea to read the whole post before making a response.
