Re: WANT TO ORDER THE NEW SKY Q HDR COMPATIBLE BOX

Hi

DPD delivered in the alloted timeframe 🙂 I can now confirm that I have a Sky Q 2TB UHD HDR Box, Hardware Version 32B240.

Information on both the side of the packaging and printed on the back of the Sky Q Box states:

Model:ES340A-d9-UKIE 2TB

See screenshot below.

All I need now is a delivery date for my new Panasonic 4KTV 🙂 Once my new TV arrives and I've connected the Sky Q 2TH UHD HDR Box, how can I tell if I'm watching in UHD or UHD HDR?

Thanks in Advance

Barry 🙂

@Barry+Mc+KelveySome TVs show a "pop up" saying HDR some like mine don't give any clue.

The most reliable way is to download both the standard UHD version and the HDR version and see if the picture quality is different, assuming your new TV has enough brightness to do HDR justice.

Hi

It's a Panasonic 2021 4K HDR OLED TV, so hopefully it will do it justice 🙂

Re: WANT TO ORDER THE NEW SKY Q HDR COMPATIBLE BOX

@Barry+Mc+Kelvey

Set the Q box to output 2160P 10-bit and makes sure the HDMI socket on the Panasonic is set to Mode 2 on the HDMI input settings.

It will flash up a text banner at the top which will show the resolution and will state HLG or HDR10 at the end of it if you are watching in HDR.

If you have a decent Panasonic TV then the built-in apps are better than those on the Q box. You will get Dolby Vision on Netflix for example & HDR10+ on Amazon Prime and access to the UHD HDR content on BBC iPlayer.

You may also need (or it may just help) to set the following :

Picture Settings ->Option Settings ->  HDMI YCbCr Range is set to Full for the HDMI you are using (the default was normal on my GZ950).  - Actual location may be different in your menu options

Mode 2 is just a Panasonic thing - other manufacturers call it enhanced or something similar. It basically just allows the full bandwidth of information to come through the high speed HDMI cable to allow for HDR. If for whatever reason you don't like the look of HDR (it can appear darker to some people, depending on the TV) then you can leave it on Mode 1 but Mode 2 is recommended and works well on mine.

hi @Barry+Mc+Kelvey as @fizzdisco definitely think you need to set the relevant HDMI to  Mode 2 & it may just be  Panasonic terminology - default is usually 1 which allows compatibility with older equipment.

Just to confuse things I route everything through a Yamaha Receiver and guess what HDMI Mode 1 & Mode 2 are the opposite way round on that !

When watching you can also use the i (info) button to show the info panel - I didn't know for sure if it showed HLG in the info as I don't yet have an HDR SKY box (I have only seen HDR (PQ) and DV (Dolby Vision).

(I have used the inbuilt iplayer to watch using HLG but the info doesn't show the same when using inbuilt apps)

TBH I think you will notice the difference with the HDR image over an SDR image without having to double check the info

hi @Barry+Mc+Kelveywhich Yamaha Amp  ?

I think the most recent amps may not need any settings changed but mine (RX-A3060) needed a setting changed in an advanced menu to allow the 10bit signal through  (and a separate one to allow pass through in standby which I also use)

Hi

It's the Yamaha RX-A2A, I'm waiting until the new TV comes to connect it all up 🙂

Ah,  being one of the latest models it defaults the HDMI 4K mode to  mode 1 which is what you need 🙂

(note as mentioned earlier the Panasonic TV needs the HDMI set to Mode 2  (& probably is not the default) - Why on earth there isn't a set standard!)

@Barry+Mc+Kelvey The difference between 200 nits SDR and 1000 nits HDR should be 'blindingly' obvious, if you'll excuse the pun.  😁

If the difference isn't obvious you've either not got your HDR settings correct or you've got terrible eyesight. 😜
