Ultrafast sky broadband being installed but havent got doubke socket free can i use extension lead

Hi u have bt openreach coming tommorow to install sky ultrafast. My neighbour said that you have to have a double socket fit it to plug into, and can't be put into an extension lead. Does anyone know why, is it because it slows down the WiFi.  I will need to use an extension as not got enough sockets thanks.

If that's Ultrafast over G.fast, then yes, connection is to the master socket (preferably fitted with a specific G.fast faceplate).  Installers won't use internal phone extension sockets because the quality of their wiring is entirely unknown and may not support the 100Mbs data speed which is 'guaranteed' on such a service.

If, however, you are referring to power sockets, then using a multigang extension is fine: that has no effect on data speed unless you are using Powerline network adapters.

Thanks for your reply. My neighbour just had it installed and the engineer said to her you need double power socket for it to plug into, I suppose I could plug in an extension lead when he's gone. I don't know why it needs to plug in straight at the wall and not into extension lead.

It doesn't: that's a misunderstanding of a principle that applies to a different form of networking.  However an Openreach installer may be happier with wall sockets rather than a trailing extension of unknown quality.  My own BT FTTP is running with both ONT and BT hub plugged into a surge-protected multiway.

Hi @Jennifer001. The engineer didn't need to have me move anything so didn't need to have an extension lead. He put an open reach box where my sky hub is and connected it all up, didn't take long either. Everything been good since.
