Re: Types of dishes

@Pablo1956XAgain make sure about ownership and get written permission if it is fixed to someone else's wall or they could just as easily take it down or take the cable to their flat if they wanted to get Q.

The only good thing is if you have exclusive use of the dish there is no earthing problem.

No that is not possible for electrical safety as well as technical reasons as communal equipment needs to be electrically bonded to a common earth point.

Slight problem. The previouse tennent who used it died. There is a new tennent who dosn't want it. He is polish and speakes very little english. Hope they don't want a dead man to sign the paperwork.

Big problem, could lose your connection at any time, if the existing tenant sees Sky working on the dish he could well stop them. It also may be too high for Sk

Perhaps you could have your own dish fitted but will need the housing association's permission and unless you are in Scotland planning permission.

  • I'm guessing "too high for Sk(y) to work on if required?
Passing on the tips I have learned in over 25 years as a more than satisfied Sky customer.

@Pablo1956 you are taking a risk as a future tenant of that unit  or the building's owner can rescind that permission at any time. Check your own lease as if there is a communal system lease holders are normally forbidden from fitting their own dish. Breaching a lease is not trivial matter,  I used to manage advice centres so know what I am talking about. It is also quite likely the engineer will refuse the install.

There are rumours that Sky are finally close to releasing a Q type box which works over broadband which could be a solution. Nothing official since 2017 but the. Express says it will be launched before Christmas not the modt reliable of sources but search the forum you will see plenty believe it will happen..

Re: Types of dishes

The tennant above me has given me a letter stating he dosn't want it and I can have it.

"a future tenant of that unit or the building's owner can rescind that permission at any time".

Not so, if another teeneant moved in years later he would have no knoledge of this. This dish is not on any lease. He would see it as it is. There is no information on any lease about this. This was done at the request of the tennant at the time and authorised by the landloard.

"if there is a communal system lease holders are normally forbidden from fitting their own dish."

This is true but this dish was instlled over 3 years ago with the concent of the landloard. He/She does not care about it or it's ownership and it is not part of the proberty and on any lease. They can refuse me to have a dish arrected as you sugested but the exsisting one has been their 3 years now.

"Sky are finally close to releasing a Q type box which works over broadband which could be a solution. "

This is an interesting bit though.

However if a future tenent wanted Q or another satelite service the installer would see the dish on their flat and use it removing the existing leads, this often happens if people take Q and lose freesat, it is just disconnected.

@Pablo1956 as I said its at your risk. Unfortunately over the years I have seen too many clients who thought they knew better and ignored advice based on experience and found out the hard way but we still helped them of course.

Of course those who had no issues never needed help. Hopefully you are in that group.

Re: Types of dishes

@Pablo1956That was before Sky was bought by Comcom (think that is what it was called) it was on Sky's route map when they were published.

Nothing official since then just rumours.

Re: Types of dishes

. . .

Also would this mean it would have to be SKY broadband and not another provider?

No one knows apart from Sky and they are giving out no information. It may even never happen.
