Sky tv in man cave

Hello, looking for advice (in very basic terms!) how to set up sky in our man cave please! We have a main Sky Q box in living room and a mini box in our bedroom, broadband is sky. Thanks in advance!

You would need another mini, a TV and make sure it is all in range. You can check this by taking your current mini into your man cave and trying it out on your TV.

@SDR Great thanks! Will try that. If not in range what do I need to do?

Ethernet might be an option

Re: Sky tv in man cave

@JambojulesIt is not entirely reliable to move the mini box, if it works great and you have proved it works however it may have worked off the mini box that you moved if it does not work.

If it is out of range there are a number of solutions depending on how far away the man cave is.

1/ get a Q booster, free from sky, and position it near the wall nearest to the man cave.

2/ run an ethernet cable between the new mini box and whatever Q device is nearest, router, main, mini box.

3/ as above but using powerline adapters, this is dependent on being on the same mains circuit.

@Jambojules

If the 'cave' is within the subscription address, it's legitimate to request that Sky provide a Q wireless booster.  If it's elsewhere (garage/shed etc) then a wired data connection, as @SDR suggests, either ethernet or Powerline networking.

Re: Sky tv in man cave

@TimmyBGood @bob1234 hi again! So we moved the mini box into man cave but wouldn't connect and suggested a Q Booster. The man cave is actually a log style cabin in the garden, and the wall of this actually backs onto the wall of our living room which the router sits right beside. But it's obvs a thick wall. I phoned Sky who said they could only provide a Q booster if I upgrade to a booster package at an extra £5 per month. I'm very reluctant to do this tbh as we are already paying over £100 per month for our Sky services (Sky sports/movies, tv, phone and broadband). So would an Ethernet be an option? Thanks in advance!

@Jambojules

Yes, you need ethernet to the main box or to use powerline plugs to connect the mini by ethernet.

First time I've heard of a Booster being chargeable.

@oj01 @Jambojules   Sky will only provide boosters free to enable full coverage in the house, once you are trying to use in the garden you are on your own. I am not sure a booster will help reach into the garden anyway, worth a try if free but not otherwise.

@Jambojules wifi boosters need a strong signal to boost so would have to be in your home.  Given then that the signal has to pass through the external wall across your garden and into the shed sorry cabin you are pushing it. Best is running an external ethernet cable which need not be complicated or expensive second best is powerline assuming the garden unit is powered from your home's consumer unit.

@oj01 suspect the customer was offered the Broadband Boost bundle which can provide boosters - technically only if wifi in the home needs them but hey the agent wanyedca sale.

Re: Sky tv in man cave

@Chrisee @bob1234 @oj01 cheers for the replies. That's exactly it, I was offered to upgrade to broadband boost to then get a Q booster for free. Apparently I don't qualify for one without doing that. Plenty of others seem to get them but hey ho..... def not paying any more and sounds as though am better with an external  Ethernet cable anyway. Would you just drill through the wall to run this out? Thanks!

Re: Sky tv in man cave

@JambojulesEthernet cable is always best but make sure you get one suitable for external use or in a conduit or similar.
