Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
@Pogit , the coloured dots button looks like it just enables the RED, GREEN and BLUE buttons for their coloured use rather then their PLUS, HOME, and SEARCH functions. There was no mention of a new Smart TV app, just the reference to the SKY GLASS TV - presumably a badged version of another brand TV.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
Wasn't 'glass' previously used by sky?
My thoughts are using your existing TV as a looking glass / window into the sky universe. As an app exists in other sky territories and Comcast already has the xfinity tv stream app it looks like it could be a good bet..

Sky only claim "magic" we are all speculating but it could just be another app we don't want and nothing to do with a streaming box.

I don't know about an app based service simply because it doesn't seem to align with Sky's current mission statement of 'all in one place' - the move into IP and a smart tv allows Sky to keep control of the user experience, integrated billing, Universal search and retailing other services... I'd probably argue that NOW (and Peacock) serves as the app based service whereas Sky essentially want to be 'TV' for a customer... I'd never say never but I think Comcast are very serious about the OS battlefield and that's going to be Sky's battlefield too...
Still in search of a great signature! I’ll get there one day!

I see Comcast have now removed this photo from the press pack. I guess they wanted to keep this quiet - ooops!!

Considering what Comcast put out there and seemingly withdrew... it's not much of a guess as to new hardware is coming. Though the look of the sky ones still seem to match the existing Q look and indeed Q is featured in some packaging.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
From the puck packaging which states " Your Sky Glass TV should be set up before your steam pick"
Suggests either a full TV or Smart box and a slave know as a PUCK.
so it's not really guessing at a new streaming main box and slave box(es) is it?
Also the remote looks heaps better so let's hope there some Q cross compatibility with parts and slave boxes as Sky Q needs a slave 4K option.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
Guessing would be Googling 'Sky Puck' reading a year old Herald NZ article about a new sky android box that would be avalible from earliest July 2021 to 2022 and inferring the quote.
The next gen Sky box will run on Google's Android software, cost $199 upfront or $19 a month over a year - a change of tack for Sky, which has not previously charged directly for hardware.
The sum, spread across Sky's 585,000 remaining satellite subs, would cover development costs. Sky's last major decoder upgrade cost the company $120 million.
and then assuming it's factual and basically what's happening here to.
Anyway I get your point @bob1234 not a lot of point speculating, but it does liven the forum up a little. Let's just hope Sky Q ideas section has been fully taken advantage of.

In this case there is simply too much out there info wise now for the 'magical reveal' not to be hardware related - we know the IP box exists as it's already on the market in other Sky territories and is a dead cert for a UK launch and we know now there is a Comcast TV initiative on the horizon but Sky rarely do press events and if it was content or app related, they would usually give the press a heads up about that - whether a Sky TV Set is magical or not is debatable but when they're using words like 'magic' itself and quoting Arthur C Clarke about technology in the build up, we can be confident we're seeing a hardware launch.
Still in search of a great signature! I’ll get there one day!

Sky Network Television Ltd in New Zealand is not part of Sky Group (a division of Comcast): it's an entirely different and independent business owned and operated only in NZ. They both have heritage as Murdoch companies, but that's now the only connection (apart from some similar branding) as those subscriber numbers would indicate, and any IP hardware they may be developing has nothing to do with Sky or Q here.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
I assumed SKY NZ are not linked to SKY UK/EU and prob Comcast. It was more of a look if these guys are able to do something very similar the. It really can't or shouldn't be claimed to be magic. The Clarke reference to 'new' technology being indistinguishable to magic cannot be (or shouldn't) applied to IP streaming as it's not new tech and most people have a basic idea of how it works. But let's face it that wouldn't stop Sky using such a quote to flog a horse that's well behind the leader of the pack now would it.

I see the comcast press release now only has two images. All of those with Sky branding have now been taken off.

Well Sky did say it was magic so someone waved a wand and it disappeared, still not long to wait until we actually find out what it is and more important how much it will cost.

That's hilarious. As I downloaded the original .zip file while it was available, should I auction the 'missing' images as NFTs or just bung them on eBay?
Edit: or sell them to the Express, who have had to use the US version to mock up a Q image....
