Interesting to see that Sky's Head of Platform Technologies just re-tweeted a link to this article:

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
I think it must be this that a family member (his partner works high up for Sky) is "trialling".
I've not seen it and they're being VERY hush, hush due to the NDA.
The only reason I know about it is that they've never had a TV. They watch everything on their laptops/tablets, but suddenly he's moaning about this massive TV that they've not got any space for 😉
I got the impression that it was pretty much a lottery as to whether they got a box/TV, but as they didn't have a TV (and therefore nothing to plug a box into) they got a TV.
I know no more.
Like others we spend a lot of money on our equipment and don't change it at all that often (approx. every 7-10 years) - infact we've done just this a couple of weeks ago.
So I'm not personally interested in a Sky TV, however for the "average Joe" I can see it being appealing. Esp. if it's on a rental basis similar to the boxes - every 2-3 years paying £50 or so to "upgrade" would be a good optoin for many.
<sarcasm starts>I'm still hoping that the "magic" referred to is the reinstatement of the mini-TV ;)<sarcasm ends>
I just hope that at some point a bit of effort is put into fixing all the little niggles with Sky Q. All this new equipment is all well and good, but it shouldn't be at the expense of the millions of existing customers.
I may moan alot about Sky (esp. the UI). However, I still think they've the best package out there esp. the UI (for all it's niggles).

Not even a 'rental': with current Q boxes are on 'free' loan (with hardware cost actually rolled into the minimum subscription period, of course, but not appearing as such on the billing). I guess it's not inconceivable that manufacturing costs for a television are now so low that this could be a financially viable model.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
Looking at the photos of the TV I do not know if they are real or a mock up would prevent me from getting one because the stand would not allow it to fit my unit, also it is too low for a sound bar to fit below the TV if mounted on a unit.
Of course it could be completely different not long to wait and find out it was all an anticlimax and they have brought out a V2 sound box.

Don't tell anyone, but it's actually a personal digital assistant in every Q box voiced by Idris Elba ; )

Rumours are the TV has an Atmos soundbar built in (at least,, that's what ISPReview are saying).

Well, at least in the 'leaked' image the set looks thick enough to have up-firing drivers...

I'll give them the benefit of the doubt regarding all the rumours flying around at the moment and presume that they have got more sense than to deprive people of the option of using the TV's they already have to get their internet TV service.
But suffice to say, Sky has got a lot of explaining to do in their coming announcement because there are a sizable number of customers out there who are quite sure that this is precisely what Sky IS, in fact, going to do.
The bottom line is that Sky really needs to get a move on and clarify all of this once and for all before they start losing customers even before the announcement.
It has been four years now, customers over here in the UK have been extremely patient, we just need to know what the position is regarding Sky and their internet TV service and how they will provide it.

Yes, they will. Probably this Thursday. Where's the issue?
before they start losing customers even before the announcement.
Only customers with no sense whatsoever. Not going to happen. It's ridiculous to think customers would pre-emptively cancel.

@Anonymous wrote:Sky are launching a broadband only service with no need for a dish by Xmas in the UK. Unlike the German Service it will feature 4k and a recording facility via the cloud.
HD comes as basic, UHD is £5.00 a month, Multi screen is £10 a month, Cinema £11.00, £25 Sky Sports.
The basic package is £26 a month which includes netflix.
The box is being tested is the Xfinity X1 which Comcast use in America.
Sky Staff are currently testing to determine what broadband speed customers require, it will only be avaialble to Sky Broadband customers initially.
The search function will work on all included apps, DAZN to be available at launch and full versions of ITV hub and Demand 4
I think the announcement will be the TVs and the Xfinity streaming box. Sky cannot make these the only way to get service as not everyone has a good enough Internet connection. Plus to make everyone have to buy a new TV would be very bad business sense.

Only a couple of days to wait to find out but if a TV sky could use the same loan arrangement as they do with Q boxes although the return would be more difficult.

Re: Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box
That's why we have a choice Xfinity streaming box or a new TV with the Sky Q app installed
If you already had a dish and have been paying your Sky Subscriptions for 10 years and you just replaced your tv last week as you have gone from Sky+ HD to Sky Q HDR
Why go from dish to dishless to have a tv with the Sky Q app installed it's no different than having the TV for Sky app installed on your Games Console and connecting that to your expensive flagship tv.
It would make more sense if the app was available for other Smart TV's instead of Sky's own branded TVs.

Rhonny, you and some others here are far too friendly and pleasant when responding to us new members like me on this forum. You need to learn to be rude, hostile and contemptuous towards us, you're making me feel far too much like I'm welcome in here.
P.S
What I said above was, of course, sarcasm, for anyone who might not have got it lol 😀🤣

Yes, that would be a BETTER option rather than selling them outright only, although, my guess is that it would cause space problems for many as people would then have an EXTRA TV in their homes to add to the one, possibly two or more sets they might already have, seeing as they are not replacing their current one/ones, just renting another for this specific purpose of watching Sky Internet TV, and, also, as you said, the return would be awkward.

As would finding somewhere to store the big cardboard box the TV will come in. I can't see Sky renting TVs, that's so 1970's (remember DER). I don't think any other provider (Comcast, Amazon Omni, etc) are going down the rental route.
