Sky to launch Sky Q without dish by Xmas based on Xfinity X1 box

Not sure if I misssed it in their published details. But nothing about screen brightness. Not that unusual for tvs not to have that figure published. But would have through Sly would have keen to sing its praises re getting a good HDR experience.

Particularly as they're now charging £5 a month for HDR with Sky Glass...

Just some quick questions if anyone has the answers:

1. I am currently with Sky Q and some packages in contract until 2022. If I do decide to jump to Glass, do I have to wait until I am out of contract? (No idea if I am in contract with SkyQ)

2. Will the current multiroom add on convert to the new 'puck multiroom'?

3. with there being no boxes, if I do move house is is at simple as just moving the TV? No need to arrange a Sky Move?

4. what is fast forward ads? Why would anyone want this or are Sky implementing their own ads on top of the current tv ads during shows?

Gut feeling about this, it will be as successful as 3D TV...

The TVs themselves seem to be lower spec than what you can get from the likes of Samsung, LG, etc for the same price.

Would have thought just having the puck to plug into your existing tv would have been better, and probably will be where we go in a couple of years when this experiment has failed.

They don't say what speed the internet ports support. I hope they have taken the opportunity to upgrade them to gigabit ports.

Because the ethernet speed isn't the issue with streaming UHD HDR to minis?

That requires the minis support UHD (which they don't - the output chipset only supports 1080) .

There's also not been official confirmation from Sky as to whether the Q box could stream UHD satellite content (whether live or recorded) to another device.

Pucks will get the video stream directly from source (be that Sky or Netflix) and not via the Glass. They'll just communicate with that to ensure the puck and Glass are on the same network.

Even so it would have been a simple upgrade (possibly even via firmware) to make the Minis UHD capable. But it would have been incredibly short-sighted of Sky not to build that capability in from the start, even if it was hidden.

And if they are going to expand the functionality of the pucks to make them also act as hotspots for Sky broadband customers, then 10/100 is slow and old.

Meanwhile, anyone with three different TVs all independently streaming different UHD content at the same time is going to need a lot more than 30Mbps coming into the house.

It really wouldn't have been that simple an upgrade - the V1 UHD boxes can't even be upgraded to HDR support (because the chipset used couldn't be upgraded thanks to a late change to HLG specs). 

Using UHD compatible chipsets in all the minis would have increased the price too - look at how much extra Amazon charge for 4k Fire sticks, for example.

But we don't know for sure that the mini is the only limitation -the minis get their Sky content from the main box, so that would need to be able to stream UHD. There's strong suggestions that the chipset in that can't do it.

Current Q minis are tech from 2016.  Dont think they would cope with 4K and doubt they can even do HDR.

I wonder how quickly the physical sky stores will get sky glass in for customers to view? 

You would think they would want them in quickly given the release is less than 2 weeks away. 

cleary we all have questions/concerns about the actual TVs capabilities in terms of picture and sound quality. I can't see too many people buying immediately without actually seeing it in person. I guess a few unbiased reviews will help aswell. 

I'm surprised so many people are certain the tv element will fail. Sky don't generally have a large history of failing and this product seems like it has had. Ncredinle amount of time put into it. They clearly want people to convert from Q to glass so it needs to be good to make us want to do that. Even if many of us have glass in the bedroom and a puck in the living room if you want to keep your superior tv. Though that does remove much of the appeal of the glass in the first place surely...

my current sky Q reduced price contract is expiring and I need to contact sky about lowering the price again or leaving by the end of the month. Part of me doesn't want to do that if this product ends up being good.

1. The Sky Glass TV is broken/not working.
2. The Sky Glass TV has been sold.

I doubt it. They probably have strong local network checking like Q to prevent use at different locations.

Both Glass TV and the pucks are specified as WiFi6, which I think we can safely assume will be in all the next generation of ISP routers (along with WPA3), but timescale for those is currently a significant issue.

if no substantial deals are to be had,

we will get an idea of how hard sky is trying to make the transition away from Q to Glass & puck.

not seen anything that says specifically wifi6, all the specs say is ethernet but guess wait and see
