Sky glass with no sky subscription

Apologies if this is in the wrong place. I am wondering what functionality Sky Glass is left with once I choose to end my sky subscriptions?

I can see from the tech specs that there is HDMi and some reviews saying there is CoAx too, so that covers Freeview and external devices. My quiestion really is: do the iPlayer/Netflix etc apps continue to work within the Sky UI even once your account is dead?

@SSEA90  You should still be able to use the apps provided you have a direct account with relevant service provider

Re: Sky glass with no sky subscription

Really do appreciate the replies, but they are directly conflicting. I would hope that if I ended my Sky subscriptions but kept my Nexflix active, I would still be able to access Netflix through the Sky Glass interface... this seems to be what you are saying.

Re: Sky glass with no sky subscription

@SSEA90

Sky are a little cagey about this. According to their official info here:

https://www.sky.com/help/articles/sky-glass-without-a-subscription#need-a-hand

They say that Glass will work like a 'normal' TV but their blurb seems to suggest you can only watch live TV via the apps, not from the regular live streams, even the free-to-air channels.

Netflix will still work but you'll need to subscribe to it separately.

The other slightly unclear thing is the Freeview tuner. At present this is only supposed to work when Glass has no network connection, either via WiFi or ethernet. So if you want to watch Freeview on Glass, you'll have to disconnect it from your broadband then reconnect when you want to watch Netflix... not exactly ideal eh?

If you want to keep Glass without the subscription you'd be much better connecting up a Freeview HD recorder via HDMI (Like a Humax Aura or Manhattan T3-R) and a 4K Firestick or Apple TV 4K box for all the apps, then you'll have much more control.

@fizzdisco  I thought that was the case (and I presume it's the same for all apps?) but the article made me think twice

@SSEA90 apologies again but based on @fizzdisco advice I will revert back to my original answer

Netflix will work as long as you keep a Sky account active, not a subscription. Presumably just so Sky can monitor what you're watching, even if it's not any of their subscription content. They manufacture the hardware so want to see what you're watching on it.

Re: Sky glass with no sky subscription

Ah thanks everyone I hadn't spotted that article.

I was hoping it would offer more as a standalone bit of kit, but it's no surprise it really only shines with a Sky package. I am tempted to get the small model, good to know I could go with a freeview recorder and firestick to fall back on should I choose to leave Sky.

Yup. That's why the whole Glass eco-system is such a car crash. Nothing is simple and straightforward, when it really should have been (and was marketed as such.)

Re: Sky glass with no sky subscription

It's the use of the words "normal TV" that's very very sketchy to me. I think it's fair to expect a "normal TV" in 2022 to include the use of 3rd party apps like iplayer, prime, netflix, disney + without the need for a sky package.

@SSEA90 true but there are still non smart tvs out there so the article is not completely wrong in that respect

You don't need a Sky package to use the 3rd party apps, you just need to have an active Sky account, ie the username/password you login to your Sky account/these forums with, which doesn't cost you anything. It's just so Sky can monitor what you're using 'their' hardware to watch. Sneaky.

Did you buy the tv or is it on monthly payments if on payments then you will have to send the tv back if you cancel your agreement
