Sky Q

After leaving Sky some 3 months ago I decided to return to Sky.  Although I am not regretting the move back I  again realise that one of the reasons I left Sky was for connectivity between main Q box asnd the 2 minis.  I have one of the mini boxes wired directly to a booster but still both mini boxes regulary freeze etc.  Is there anyone out there who can provide me with options to finally sort this annoying problem out? When Sky vivist they tell me that everything is OK - according to their readings on their machine.  If they revisited I will get the same explanation and be offered a second booster which I had previously but it never cured the problem.

Regards

Re: Sky Q

@Atso

The booster should be placed equidistant between the main and the mini boxes. Is this the case here? In which case you shouldn't need to hardwire the mini to the booster. You should just be able to go to Settings / Setup / Network / Reset and at step 2 of 4 on screen, press the WPS button on the booster to connect it. This should work for both minis.

Are all the lights green on the booster?

If you do want to connect a mini by ethernet, then when you connected the mini to the booster by ethernet, did you then go to Settings / Setup / Network / Reset, and at step 2 of 4 on screen, DON'T press any WPS buttons when prompted as this will override the ethernet and will try to connect wirelessly again. Instead just let it connect on its own which takes around 30 seconds. This ensures that the box is properly connected by ethernet.

When connecting the other mini, you need to Reset its Network as above, but this time press the WPS button on the nearest of the main box or booster or other mini box to connect it.

@Atso

External Powerline networking adapters are certainly an option: Q was always meant to have built-in Powerline to supplement its wireless.

Re: Sky Q

I'm amazed this is still happening - the only way I could resolve this was to set static IP addresses on all SkyQ devices and be sure these IP addresses were excluded from the DHCP server on the SkyQ router.

Since I did that years ago, we've had no freezing issues at all.

We do have all SkyQ devices on ethernet, WiFi is left on for all of them and also PowerLine is enabled...

Re: Sky Q

Many thanks for your reply.  Can you please provide some guidance on the Powerline?  Also some further guidance on how to address the IP/DHCP matters.  I am not that versed that I can do this on  my own.  Regards

@Atso you buy powerline adapters in kits you plug one into a wall socket near the hub and connect the two by ethernet jumper that comes in the kit. The second plugs into a wall socket near the Q box again connected by ethernet. That essentially is that assuming your homes wiring is suitable which the huge majority of systems aremost adapters need no set up they find each other..

I use a set of 3 Develo adapters which gives both stable TV and also fast wifi from the wifi hot spots. You get around 20% to 40% of the rated speed in most cases so my 1200Mb/s units deliever around 400Mb/s . TP-Link also make decent units. With decent connectivity you should not need to mess around with IP addressing but YMMV.

Sky removed the option to enable Powerline many, many firmware versions ago, and more recent Q box models have no relevant electronic components.

Timmy

I am a bit confused by your statement.  Please expand on the Powerline situation.  Regards  Atso

@Atso  What @TimmyBGood  has posted is very clear, the powerline option that was built into the Sky Q boxes is no longer an option.  Not sure what needs to be expended on.

@AtsoIt is just as @TimmyBGood said the original Sky Q boxes had powerline built in but not officially supported. I got the "Silver" package with a V1 2TB box and the powerline worked well.

Later software updates disabled it but I believe the hardware was still in the V2 which one of the reasons for the non standard power connection.

The hardware was not in V3 boxes.

Built-in Q Powerline was never actually enabled by Sky.  Early firmware releases had a 'hidden' option where a customer could switch it on, but this setting was removed by a firmware update several years ago* as for some reason the Sky implementation of Powerline ultimately appears not to have been standards-compliant. Consequently,  v3 2TB and UHD/HDR 1TB boxes have no Powerline components at all.

*Edit: this seems to have been release 070 in the spring of 2018.

Re: Sky Q

Thanks, do you think the introduction of Develo's products would make any difference?  They are Powerline adapters.  From what you say the answer is likely to be no.  Regards  Atso

I am not sure what you want to know I use Develo LAN Magic 2 and they work very well but expensive.

Re: Sky Q

@Atso

I have all my Sky Q boxes connected by ethernet to TP-Link powerlines, and it has been stable and reliable for about four years.

Re: Sky Q

Seems I've never checked since enabling it. Ah well, we are still using static IP addresses and for us, that instantly stopped any crashes across all boxes.
