Sky Mobile & 4G Router
Hi,
A slightly different question to the couple of others I have seen about 4G routers...
We have a holiday home and it seems the only network to give decent coverage is O2, which of course Sky Mobile runs off of. We want to install a 4G router and from researching this forum, that would seem technically to be no problem by merely purchasing a SIM only deal. The fact that data rolls over is a massive bonus and as far as I can see tethering is permitted.
However I have been advised by a friend that the use of a 4G router is very different to creating a mobile hotspot from a phone and is probably breaking the rules of the contract. I can't see anything that would prevent the use of one of the SIMS in a 4G router so before I order anything:
- Do any of the current Sky Mobile SIMS work in a 4G router (such as the TP-Link Archer MR600);
- Is there any way of making the streaming to a Sky App work through the router (hence not using data);
- Is it breaking any contract rules and therefore is there a risk of being blocked?
Many thanks 🙂
Andrew

Re: Sky Mobile & 4G Router
I have done exactly this in our holiday cottage.
It does work but not without problems.
Our cottage is quite remote so the signal is not brilliant and mostly 3G rather than 4G, especially it seems when the weather is bad.
However, what I find exasperating is that quite often the router shows a full mobile signal (3 bars) but I still get no internet connection. The Tether app shows that there is a connection, but there is nothing I can do to kick it into action.
Being able to roll data onto the SIM is a great benefit but the reliability of the connection leaves a lot to be desired.
Any ideas anyone has as to why it is so unreliable, or whether there is anything that can be tweaked in the settings to improve the re-establishment of a connection when there apparently is a good signal would be most appreciated.

Re: Sky Mobile & 4G Router
Hello Andrew,
i saw your post from last year and I need to to exactly what you describe. We have a solid 4G signal but the copper based line broadband is terrible.
Did you try this and did it work?
best
Andy Mac

Re: Sky Mobile & 4G Router
Hello. Did you ever solve your issue.
I was using a Vodafone mifi unit with unlimited data but monthly cost was high. I have quite a lot of data in my Sky piggy bank now.
I have a boat and would like to watch Netflix/Amazon etc. I tried using my phone as hotspot but wasn't successful.
thanks

Re: Sky Mobile & 4G Router
Hi
I was interested in this post. Has anyone used a Sky SIM in a 4G router (eg D Link) in France? In the past I have used my mobile as a hotspot and it worked OK. I've just been over for the first time in 18 months and I couldn't get it to work so I wonder if something's changed in the way you can use a SIM. It worked OK with a Plusnet SIM so I'm not convinced it's a set up problem (although this was a new Moto phone so maybe I got a setting wrong). Obviously using a router with Sky SIM would be great as I could use 'piggybank' data, but I'm wondering if this is possible.
Thanks
Tim
