@rscott , nice to disagree with an oracle. A Sky debacle yet again and no one from Sky wants to take ownership. You are wrong about HLG, the clues in hybrid. Oh dear the launch was not February 2016 it was the press launch in November 2015. Interesting thing q became available Feb 2016 for people like me to loan

The broadcast standard for HLG HDR was not agreed until July 2016, please refer to here - https://www.itu.int/dms_pubrec/itu-r/rec/bt/R-REC-BT.2100-0-201607-S!!PDF-E.pdf

Laterly superceded and enforced in July 2018, please refer to here - https://www.itu.int/dms_pubrec/itu-r/rec/bt/R-REC-BT.2100-2-201807-I!!PDF-E.pdf

It's just a variety of hdr the same as dolby vision etc. It was developed to alow both hdr and sdr content in the same stream to allow for compatible and non compatible tvs to still access the content, in hdr or not. Meta data is still used the same. Its static just like hdr 10 so is less complex than other varieties. Sky has big style dropped the ball here

HLG doesn't use metadata, it uses an extended logarithmic gamma curve (it where it gets it name from, Hybrid Log Gamma) that has the HDR information "encoded" on it. It's also a dynamic frame by frame format like Dolby Vision. The only downside is HLG  doesn't quite have the same dynamic range as HDR10.

The lower dynamic range was something that Dolby Labs kept banging on about when Dolby Vision failed to get included in the UHD-1 Phase 2 spec.

Re: Sky HDR

@simon194  I thought HLG was Scene by Scene not frame by frame, but I'll stand corrected

Re: Sky HDR

You keep saying that , but then why does the hdr logo come on the screen when I play 'gangs of lemors' ?. When I watch 'Flying Creatures'  it just has uhd. I even posted a picture earlier , with the logos on. I turned hdr+ off and I still get hdr. It comes from the HDMI input source.

I know what I can see with my eyes on my tv.

Re: Sky HDR

@Minni3 How do you turn the HLG on and off? Or you talking about the Samsung TV? I don't see anywhere on the programs HLD coming on. I can see it from my Sony

HLG is a relative scene referred signal, whereas PQ is an absolute display referred signal.

It all essentially comes down to lighting. One uses the natural light of the scene in front of the camera while the other one sets the scene artificially with the use of metadata.

It's all very boring... but interesting to some 😉

Re: Sky HDR

For those with Samsung TVs, when HDR kicks in the backlight goes up to maximum. That's how you can tell. So look at what your backlight is on when watching 'normal' TV, then see what is when you watch HDR content. Mine jumps from 7 to 20. It doesn't say HDR anywhere (unless you're watching Amazon Prime).

I completely agree. I always use vivid for HDR on my XF9005. Thought I have gamma at +1 for HLG & Dolby Vision. HLG looks much better through Sky than iPlayer for me with 62mg download speed.

Re: Sky HDR

@Chicklet83  I have the same issue as have had sky q since it first came out a few years back so cannot access HDR despite having a TV that is compatible. After going through a few departments and some waits as most of the sky team are working from home, they don't have a 'Customer Journey' to upgrade the original boxes to the newer version that is HDR Compatible at the current time, I had this checked and checked again as I was renewing my contracts with them as I was out of contract for TV and broadband. It was suggested I contact them in a few months time to see if this upgrade was possible ones things have returned to some sort of normality.

@atann  How can you do a side by side comparison with no HDR content available via BBC iPlayer at the moment due to the pandemic?
