Wouldn't it great if when Sky launch an upgrade path for the V1 2tb boxes to HDR compatible versions they charge an extortionate amount of money to do so. Personally, it wouldn’t bother me in the least to pay £500+ to upgrade but it would be worth it to see the meltdown on this forum from those who I have absolutely no respect for, are utterly incensed and are demanding an immediate upgrade to their boxes in the middle of a worldwide pandemic, 15 minutes after Sky launch HDR with what most would consider to an extremely mediocre and uninteresting offering of content.

Of course it will never happen but it would be worth it just to irritate those “Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells” posters who visit these forums.

@rozel So full of yourself actually @rscott is correct "

hardware version 32B206 is the v3 box.  Sky don't reference the ES numbers on the labels on their box pages"

Box pages is referring to the Sky Q box manuals you do read manuals as well as labels

Hardware Version 32B206 is 2TB Box UHD ES340d9uk

Hardware Version 32B205 is 1TB Box UHD ES340d8uk

So if the engineer only had the 8UK then you would have known it was the 1TB Box as you no doubt made sure you read the label on the Sky Q box before you allowed the engineer to continue with the install.

So what you have a V3/ Titan box no different to the V2/Project Ethan II box(as I like to call mine) unless you want to get your tape measure out

Is it Fall or Fail of the Titans

That's great then. We finally get HDR & it's 8-bit! Hopefully a software update will resolve this when more content becomes available. Especially for movies & sport.

Listen people, I no longer have any idea what the hell you're on about. Can I suggest you all stop scoring points against one another and we get back to sensible discussion?

You didn't notice it was 8-bit HLG HDR when watching it, so clearly people can't tell the difference. So getting 10-bit would make what improvement exactly?

Re: Sky HDR

I've been  looking at this subject in particular for quite a long time.

Just looking for some advice as I've never posted before.

Like many others on this forum, and in particular this subject, I subscribed to Sky Q pretty much when it's was a new technology, and had the 2tb 'silver' box.

I rang Sky on 28/05/20 as my June bill had considerably risen in price, and I wanted to find out why this had happened.

Turned out I was 'out of contract' and all of the discounts that had been applied to my account at various times over the last couple of years had expired.

I spoke to a lovely lady, who applied some discounts and also mentioned the 'signature' package.

I then asked about my box, and mentioned the hdr issue,  and as part of me  re-signing an 18 month contract, I was offered a replacement hdr compatible box.

I had to pay a £20 engineer visit fee.

Just checked my emails and it looks like Sky are sending me packaging to return my old box.

Can anyone tell me why an engineer is required, as it takes about 5 minutes  to connect a Sky Q box to existing connections.

Surely given the current climate, an engineer visit is unnessecary, and his/her time could be used elsewhere.

Thank you.

Re: Sky HDR

Edit.

Meant to add that it would make sense for replacement box  to be sent through the post

@MattandJan

Simply that Sky don't currently have a logistics path for despatching main Q boxes in any way other than with installers, and get them returned that way too.  I suspect part of the process of swapping out the v1 hardware may well be setting up a postal system, otherwise the installer hours consumed in just driving will be outrageous.

It would reduce/eliminate colour banding apparent in graduated skies, etc.

WCG (BT.2020) really needs to be 10-bit to get the full benefit. Of course we don't know if the HLG content is 8-bit or 10-bit. As I said in my post, it could be the Sky Q box is capable of down-converting 10-bit content to 8-bit output - although that would involve considerable processing to effectively dither each frame.

Re: Sky HDR

Did you not ask the nice lady on the phone? I guess they need to know it's working correctly. How much did you get it for? Do you get everything, movies and sport? I recently negotiated a new price as well for another 18 months.
