Re: Upgrade old Sky Q 2TB to new version for HDR

This is the 'spit and polish' that Sky always seem to miss.

In the big scheme, how many v1 boxes will be swapped out? Probably a small no. especially initially. Surely they could've put something in place for those 'that must have it yesterday'.

We've got too many recordings and a non-HDR TV to care about it for now.

It screams self install. Last time I had a self install of a hub/router from Virgin Media. It was sent out in a box that you reused to send your old equipment back. It has these dual use clip things that put the box back together. It's very well thought out.

Is there still absolutely no way to get recordings from one main box to another if I was to get a newer one 😂

Unfortunately all Recordings leave with the old box.  The only realistic way to avoid this would be if the boxes were designed with swappable hard-drive caddies, which would have been nice.

The V1 and V2 boxes have the drive in a removable caddy.

I am one of those very early apodters of SkyQ - paying a LOT more than some it seems for my package and also have the V1 2TB box and multi-room.

I understand that the V1 box may well be incapable of adding the HLG update and I have no issue with that - I understand technology moves forward etc. However, Sky added HLG to F1 at the start of last season in Italy and therefore have had a YEAR to devise some strategy for those of us who would need to be upgraded before they bring HLG to everyone in the UK.

I do think that Sky should have at least made some statement for its loyal customers - even if they were to explain that any possibilities of arranging upgrading the V1 boxes is currently on hold whilst the situation here is as it is. At least then those of us with V1 boxes would have some information and ease some of that disappointment.

As others have said, we are paying for a service and part of that includes access to the same upgrades as EVERYONE else who are on SkyQ. Unlike previous Sky boxes, we are not owners of that hardware so it should be Sky's responsibility to ensure the hardware is upgraded if it is technically 'out of date' to bring that service to ALL its customers.

Again though, I totally understand that the current situation is perhaps a reason that is not currently possible and Sky may well have plans to upgrade boxes for us on V1. However, I do think they should have said something - I am sure that the vast majority of us with V1 boxes would be understanding - it may not stop the feeling of disappointment, but it would alleviate the felling of anger and resesntment for being 'penalised' as an early adopter.

Its amazing what good communication can do in situations like this...

Anyway, I will wait to hear from Sky but if anyone hears anything, please can you let us V1 owners know - thank you

Sky Italia's F1 coverage is 'fake' HDR - the current F1 UHD feed is SDR only, so processing is applied by Sky (with varying success) to give it an HDR appearance.

It's not like they've suddenly put 500 hours of HDR on demand content online  - we're talking about 20 hours or so of nature programming. So, yes, it's disappointing not everyone can view it immediately, but not the end of the world.. I'm sure that before they launch serious volumes of content, there'll be processes for upgrading in place.

And if you feel you're paying too much for Q, then why not speak to Sky about it? I'm sure they'll either offer you a discount to stay, or let you leave, if you're not in contract...

couldnt agree with you more mate, thats exactly what i have said. its not about having a V1 box. its about communication and upgrade Sky have had plenty of time to have something prepared.

and those who are ok good for you. if your getting fed up with people moaning about it ...tough, thats what forums are for... a little communication from sky is all we ask...just saying you will have to wait is poor customer service.

@63johnw - We can't say what may or may not happen in the future and only state what is current policy.

Thanks again @GordonTGopher  have to say I will be very disappointed if sky don't bring in some sort of scheme to swap the boxes once things settle down. It will definitely put me off being an early adopter of future sky products if this is the case.

Re: Sky HDR

I get that the virus has put things back but Sky have had plenty of time long before the virus even appeared to sort out the v1 box issue but didn't do anything. Box has crashed quite a few times since I got it when Sky q come out. No idea though when I'd even get a replacement.

Sky don't make that kind of information public: something could probably be extrapolated from the reported subscriber numbers in the annual reports from before the Comcast takeover.  The 2017 report (which covers a largely 2016 operational year) quoted 'Sky Q in over 1 million UK customer homes' for example, which to my mind implies at least a million v1 main boxes were deployed by that point so it's not going to be a trivial number even allowing for attrition three years on.

Re: Sky HDR

Useless, don't have the suitable Q 2tb mine is the unsuitable one and when you phone staff at skydon't know anything about it as they hadn't been told anything about HDR launching.  Disappointing, will likely be told pay us for a new one

thats true mate..but your missing the point. sky has already had plenty of time to plan ahead before implementation. something could have been prepared in advance to deal with people with V1 - its than easier for sky staff, will stop unessasary phone calls. and people thinking there missing out on something. they may or maynot want

Re: Sky HDR

If people are asked to pay for an upgraded box right or wrong..sky will be getting lots of suddenly broken boxes to replace.thats a fact.

Re: Sky HDR

  • @rscott  Funnily enough the press are reporting this morning that the software update to enable the viewer to watch in HDR (if your box is compatible) will be rolled out gradually over the next week or so. You can understand customers confusion over this.
