Sky Glass Positives?

I've ordered my sky glass this week, and I'm expecting it to be delivered on Friday.

We've decided to get one because our current TV has died a death, and this is the simplest way for us to replace it.

I've been having a browse through the forum today, and I'm really struggling to find anyone saying good things about the glass, so does anyone have anything positive to say? I fully understand there are teething problems (I work in IT so get that these things happen), I really just want to hear positive things!

My wife likes it because:

a) There's now only one remote (from three for Q/TV/Amp on the previous setup)

b) The Playlist issues don't affect her particular viewing habits

c) Her eyesight isn't good enough for the fairly average image quality of the Glass panel to be a concern

d) She finds the audio driver proximity to the image creates more comprehensible dialogue than the separate speakers of the 5.1 system I had running from the main Q box

It's worth noting that I don't necessarily agree with her...

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

My other half has become really attached to the idea of the glass, and I'm just not looking forward to the disappointment I get the impression he's going to feel.

Holding out hope that it'll be a major improvement on the 22" screen we're currently using, and that the YouTube issues will be fixed by Friday, because that's a major part of our watching habits!

@LunaMissions I wrote a review a couple of weeks back which you can find here in fact I am more positive as I get used to the system which suits the way we view TV mainly selecting things from the menus and search. If you do a lot of time shifting of the soaps it may not be the best system.

Now I have the pucks set up the way I want them they work well. The TV is never going to win awards but actually is pretty good value. There are a number of tips on how to get the best picture settings etc. Hopefully you will have no issues and enjoy your purchase.

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

Thank you  @Chrisee, that was a really interesting read!

I've seen a lot of complaints about the interface/rails and I'm hoping that will improve as the TV starts to recognise what we like to watch.

In regards to your comment about games consoles - we have a PlayStation 5, am I right in thinking it will run just fine and it'll look ok, as long as we're not pro-gamers?

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

@LunaMissions  apart from the frustrations with some bugs and getting the updates for them:

  • It's fantastic to have all apps in one box, Sky/Netflix/Amazon/Disney and have them all integrated into the interface.
  • One remote control is a bonus.
  • Love the sound it generates.
  • Very happy with picture quality.
  • The fact you literally can do everything just via the tv instead of seperate boxes.
  • The fact it does not need any cables from sat dishes etc...
  • The fact it's a 30 day rolling contract, who knows what the future will bring.

I am sure when all the issues are ironed out it will be a fantastic product, just wish they would get done quicker! guess i'm just impatient.

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

I can fully understand the impatience!

The lack of cables is really exciting for me because it means I can rearrange my living room! At the minute I'm limited by the satellite cable!

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

@LunaMissionsyes I had cables running accross the room before due to the socket been on the other side on the room I have wood floor so couldn't easily hide them, it was great getting rid!  The fact that if I move I don't have to worry about if their is a dish at the premises!

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

@Anonymous yes, I think that being able to just up and move house without any hassle is a great thing as well.

Isn't it funny how all this extra devices, sky box, fire stick etc, that have been necessary for a while now are just becoming redundant!

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

@LunaMissionsit sure is, I still have my apple TV Box though because I use Plex, it would be great if the release that app but I doubt it.

Whilst the issues are being ironed out try to keep positive there are some frustrations but the overall product will be fine when you get used to it (it will take a few weeks).

@LunaMissions Your console will connect with no real  issues but the Glass does not supportthe bells and whistles like VRR or 120Hz gaming. The panel is limited to 60Hz .

We're definitely a 'streaming' family and couldn't get Sky Q due to trees in the line of satellite so we jumped at it when this came out.

The TV has been absolutely fine apart from sometimes needing cajoling switching on and motion sensors currently not really working. Both are known faults supposedly and being worked on. The pucks are more problematic and occasionally stutter and then speed up but it doesn't massively detract from viewing as the audio is unaffected. Puck performance is more an issue when viewing live UHD sport but I find rebooting before watching a football game or F1 race means it works fine.

The UI is fabulous for me. Bright, colorful, sensible and well laid out. I don't have the issues other have on the Playlist as we generally stream and use it to add things we come across that we want to watch at a later date. Not to 'record' things.

Re: Sky Glass Positives?

My main concern with the playlist is that we'll see something on the BBC, add it to the playlist to watch later and then by the time we get back to it, it isn't available on iPlayer! At least the kids won't be able to accidentally record random things because they've been playing with the remote!

I'd say 80% of our watching at the minute is streaming, the other 20% is live sport, so I definitely feel pretty optimistic that we'll be ok, once we get used to it and the niggles are worked out!

They may not be able to record but they can easily press the '+' button so you could have a lot of strange programmes suddenly appearing in your Playlist.

As for watching things on Playlist, yes, you need to watch them sooner rather than later in case they fall off but that's always been a limitation of streaming anyway. It's just accepting you can no longer 'own' a recording.
