Sky Cinema Not updating properly

Today is Monday 3rd January 2022 and the whole point of sky cinema is a new premier every day so I look at the TV guide to see what the new premier is for the 3rd January and there is no new premier, where the new premier should be is the suicide squad and all the other films on today are films that have already been premiers over the last week and this problem continues all week and the following week apart from the weekends.

so I go to the sky cinema selection of my sky q box and there is nothing new there like the TV guide and other pages who tell sky customers what's going on sky premier such as Vodzilla, Den of Geek, Digital Spy etc are not saying what the missing premiers are this is embarrassing and sky is supposed to be a new premier every day and at the moment it isn't a new premier every day its a premier a day weekends only

also I feel it's unacceptable for sky cinema to have got ride of the sky cinema app and the proper sky cinema website it used to have, sky Cinema is going downhill massively and am considering cancelling my subscription because it is unacceptable

It was a new premiere every day but that marketing campaign has now been quietly discontinued.

Due to a mixture of reduced quantity in terms of the movie pipeline and Sky losing all Disney and 20th Century (Fox) films, it was not realistic to continue with the daily premiere tagline.

It could well be further dented with the impending launch of Paramount+ - even though that will be included with the Sky Cinema pack, it will leave the Sky Cinema service looking even thinner.

The bottom line is that you, as the customer, can choose to subscribe or cancel. If you don't find it good value, contact them and see if they have any discount available for that pack. If they don't, you can cancel it.

The Sky/Paramount Plus press release did confirm their films would remain on Sky - I just expect recent theatrical releases will be shared across the two services.

But you are right in that Sky have moved away from the 'new movie' daily in their promotion some time ago and looking at NOW's website and echoing what Sky said a year ago, they're pivoting to a new Sky original film every week (which looking ahead to this month seems to be the case with Rock Dog 2, Mass, Save The Cinema and One Shot rolling out each week) so seems like the pandemic has given them the excuse to shift resource from licensing filler content and towards more exclusive to the service titles.

I think the real question for 2022 is whether Sky can get more of their theatrical partners to bring titles to the service quicker - we're already seeing Warner & Studiocanal titles hit Sky after 4/5 months so it's going to be interesting to see if the likes of Paramount, Sony and (especially) NBCU follow suit.

Re: Sky Cinema Not updating properly

I get that but there are plenty of low budget gems or not gems that probably wouldn't take much money to acquire that could be put on sky cinema just look on sky store there are thousands of low budget films that don't have a streaming company assigned to them that are just waiting for someone to pick them up

That is what they have been doing up until now... even without a pandemic there was always a finite number of movies they could pick up from their output partners so they did acquire small and fairly unknown titles and had well intentioned things like the world cinema strand which petered out probably due to lack of engagement hence them now being few and far between.

I think at some point picking up some of these cheap titles have increasingly diminishing returns so perhaps a change in strategy made sense to Sky especially if they increasingly pivot to putting more resource into their own acqusitions and productions which may have more engagement from their customers.

Re: Sky Cinema Not updating properly

I agree but I still think they should try and use as many of those smaller budget films as they can before other streamers pick them up or they should go back to the sky cinema format 4 or 5 films one day a week that seems to be a better solution.

and it's not like sky don't have the rights to lots of studios except Disney and fox

they have

universal

paramount (for now)

warner bros (up until 2025 at least)

studiocanal (although for some reason amazon still)

eOne

Altitude (although no idea what's going on with them because some go on sky some don't)

sony (I assume they still have them as they got peter rabbit 2)

no idea about lionsgate because last year they got older lionsgate films like

Angel Has Fallen

Rambo: Last Blood

Where'd You Go Bernadette?

Knives Out

Summerland

Barb and Star

Bombshell

Midway

Military Wives

I don't think Altitude is  an exclusive deal - but Sky appear to be their preferred partner and I believe Altitude still handle the theatrical releases of the Sky Original titles.

They renewed with Sony in 2020 so that ought to have some years to run, Studiocanal's Pay 1 was exclusive to Sky from 2021 (though Amazon had some residual 2020 titles like Saint Maud and Peninsula) and the Lionsgate deal was an oddity - their 'Pay 1' is 6 months on Amazon and 6 months on Starzplay... I think Sky had the 'Pay 2' window though they were able to nab Summerland and Barb & Star.

I suspect 4 films a week will be the eventual sweet spot but given that Netflix, Amazon and Disney are all investing in their own straight to service titles, I don't even think there's any signficant competition  for those smaller titles anymore... and the increasing rise of AVODs like IMDB TV, Pluto and Roku Channel gives distributors an opportunity to monetise if their titles dont get a pay tv deal.

Sky have been acquiring cheap new movies over the last year to ensure they had a new premiere every day - as is clear from the number of posts on here complaining about them...

Re: Sky Cinema Not updating properly

It's just frustrating cause I liked a new premier every day and I just worry for sky that they are gonna fall short in terms of subscribers for sky cinema due to lack of content and sky originals are all well and good but they don't have the best track record in terms of reviews so I just feel that they need the smaller films in order to keep subscribers interested because I found some real gems with the smaller budget films and I know for a fact that a lot of people did

Sky Cinema customers will be getting a lot of extra content (including some movies) free in the near future when Paramount+ is added to their service for free.

Will Paramount+ apply to Sky+ customers?
