Returning to Sky Q have some questions

Hi all,

I'm finally returning to Sky Q after previously being an early adopter years ago and reverted back to Sky HD.

Now the new update has solved a lot of problems and the 2TB is available I thought now was the right time to come back.

I've ordered 3 Mini's all of which will be hardwired.

Can anyone remind me what settings I need to configure to get started, such as turning eco mode off on the Mini's etc?  Turning off WiFi etc?

Also my soundbar isnt full 4K so will be connecting Sky directly to TV and using Optical to soundbar for sound, any issues with this?

Thank you,

Optical from the TV to the soundbar will suit most scenarios (if you have games consoles, etc).  The only thing to watch out there is delay/lip-synch, but that can be sorted out in the options.

I don't recall many other options except for setting screen resolution and sound settings.

Hi @CatManDo

Assume your main Q box is also hard wired so that all Q boxes are connected to your router by Ethernet.

If this is the case then you can turn off all WiFi in all boxes.

Just be aware that if you are on Sky Broadband and you want the minis to act as WiFi hotspots then the WiFi needs to be left on.

One issue that you can experience with Optical is sound out of sync.   This doesn't happen in all setups and you will have to see how it goes.

@oldfella

Thank you, yes all of the equipment will be hardwired back to the Sky Router.

I'm not interested in using them as hotspots so will probably just want to switch of WiFi completely.

Do you know if I get UHD automatically or is that an extra cost?

You will need the Ultra HD add on to watch UHD and HDR content.

Except: only for Disney+ app, do you not require the Ultra HD addon, just a capable box and TV. .

Hi @CatManDo

To switch off all Q box WiFi best to do this with all Ethernet connected and then carry out a Network reset on each Q box starting with the main Q box.

Network Reset found in Q box Home - Settings - Setup - Network.
Highlight Status and then select Reset on the right hand side. Follow instructions on main Q box to connect wired.

On mini boxes the Network reset will connect by Ethernet automatically but make sure that you do not carry out any WPS.   Just wait until the mini connects.

As already posted you need the Q UHD add on to access any Sky UHD content with the Signature pack and will normally need the HD pack first (or a joint HD/UHD add on)

@CatManDoI don't know if it will cause you problems but only 2 mini boxes can be used simultaneously.

Thank you, once the below is done, do I still need to go into the hidden menu to disable WiFi?:

Yes Sorry @CatManDo

Immediately after each box is connected after the Network reset go into its hidden menu and turn off both bands of WiFi.  Confirm before exit.

Re: Returning to Sky Q have some questions

Does anyone know if I will need to have received a new viewing card by Friday or will they just use the one I already have?

They might be able to use your old viewing card but if not, the installer usually carries spare cards that they can give you.

@CatManDo if your current card starts with a 7 or above then it can be re-used if not then hopefully your new card will arrive in time although engineers normally carry spare cards with them

Re: Returning to Sky Q have some questions

@CatManDo  If you are also having Sky as your isp then do you know which router you will be getting as 3 x minis play q box wired will either leave you without any other wired options for the rest of your network. Or you may not even have enough lab ports on your router for your preferred connection method.

Re: Returning to Sky Q have some questions

@CyberFriday

Thanks I already have the Sky Router and have a switch in between to give me enough ports so hopefully should be good.
