URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

HI Guys,

I am not that tech savy at all, i know the basics but that is about it. I have 3 boxes. 1 Sky Q and 2 x mini boxes. It used to be wirlesses but i have now wired all boxes - but i am not sure if its working correctly so i just want some advice please.

1 Ethernet wire from Router direct to Sky Q main box

1 Ethernet wire from Router to Mini Box

1 Ethernet wrire from Router to Mini Box 2

I went to engineer settings turned off all wireless settings. However in network name its always says connected to my Virgin Broadband. I never thought any thing of it previously until today.

I upgraded my Virgin and changed all the ethernet cables to the new router. The SKY box worked fine without me changing settings but when i click on settings and network it says connected to my OLD VIRGIN network with the old network name even though that network does not exist anymore. I go to reconnect and it breifly connects me on SKY network then goes back to the old Virgin Network.

I am so confused - Can somone please help?

P.S - The TV does work fine and shows all the channels but i dont know what im doing. I jsut follow you tube clips and google.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

@xlnc007If it works don't worry mine shows the information from two routers ago.

@xlnc007

It's working fine.

Your Sky network will often name itself after the first wifi network it connected to. It doesn't mean your boxes are connected by wifi.

Also, just to say, when you connected the ethernet cable to the main box, did you then go to Settings / Setup / Network / Reset, and select Wired Connection?

And when you connected the minis, did you go to Settings / Setup / Network / Reset, and at step 2 of 4 on screen, avoid pressing any WPS buttons when prompted as this will override the ethernet and will try to connect wirelessly again. Instead you needed to just let it connect on its own which takes around 30 seconds? This ensures that the mini box is connected properly by ethernet.

Once all connected properly, then you can go into the engineers menu on each box and turn off the wifi.

Re: URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

Hi Bob,

Thanks. Does that mean i am connected to the ethernet on all three devices?

Is there anyway i can check i am connected 100%. I remember they used to have a way but SKY removed it from their settings. I assume i am as the network is no longer active.

Shall i just ignore the network for the time being then? I guess i only need to change it if i ever go to wireless? Is that right? It should then revert to my new network once i connect it via wireless

Re: URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

Hi Rhonny,

I did go to wired connection. I think on one of the minis i did press the WPS button because it said you had too. The other mini i did not press any WPS.

Shall i go back to the mini and go back to reset and this time not press the WPS?

I also notice i cannot go to engineer menu on mini boxes. Is this correct?

Re: URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

@xlnc007

Yes, reset that mini. Don't press any WPS buttons when connecting by ethernet. Ignore what it tells you. Maybe do that on all mini boxes to be sure..?

You can indeed go into the engineer's menu on all boxes. The same on all. Just go down to Settings but don't press Select. Instead type 0 0 1 Select to open the engineer's menu. After turning off the wireless, press Confirm.

Re: URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

Hi Rhonny

I jsut did that. Thanks for the advice. I went and done all mini boxes again. It took a long time to get to step 2 to 4, around 3 minutes. Have to wait till the WPS sign goes off.

Funny thing is - the Wirless was on for each box. I just turned it off for the main box an hour ago and it was on again when i doubled check. I dont understand that?

So now i no how to do the mini boxes, i think i should do the main box too jsut in case. Shall i do the same steps on the main box as you told me for the mini boxes to ensure its ethernet cable? Or is there a different method as its the main SKY Q box

Re: URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

@xlnc007

Same method for all boxes, via the engineer's menu turning off 2.4ghz and 5ghz wifi. (It will have turned on after you reset the network on each.)

Best way to check you're then connected by ethernet is to download something and remove the ethernet cable. If it stops downloading, it's definitely ethernet-connected.

Re: URGENT ETHERNET QUESTION - PLEASE HELP

One final question - this may sound silly.

If i in say one month want to check all boxes are using ethernet and not wifi (just incase sky try a sneaky one and reseet everything)

I can just go to each box and make sure each box has its wifi turned off (as it is now). If the wifi is off on each box then that means i am using ethernet doesnt it.
