New sky 4 hub .

Hi folks ..getting the new sky hub 4 delivered on Friday 12th November. 

It's to replace the sky hub 3 which was using superfast WiFi, and we're moving to ultrafast .

My question is we are told that a sky engineer is coming out next Tuesday..not sure why but when I get the new hub4 do I connect it up myself or wait until sky call on Tuesday. Just another question is we have the hub3 atm connected to the main phone line box but we don't have a home phone do I still need it or the new one(hub4) to be connected to the phone line box ??

Presumably if your moving to Ultrafast then it is FTTP?  If so then yes an engineer would be needed to install the ONT and FTTP fibre cable.

FTTP is fibre to the Premises, this does need what is called an ONT, your old phone line would nopt be used.  What info did you get from Sky when you upgraded, what speeds have they said you would get?

We live in a relatively new build with no over head lines in the street ...Will this fibre optic cable work be done out in the street /junction box rather than in the house ?

If there is not already a connection the work will need to be done within the house also. Certainly the ONT has to be inside.

Hi @mdc4566 

Leave the hub until the engineer arrives, then you can connect it. As mentioned Ultrafast does not use your exsiting copper phone line it is delivered over fibre cables which will be pulled into your house and connected to a white Openreach Box which will then feed your router.

Once this service is active you will connect any phones you have to the back of the router rather than your telephone socket.

Thanks ..I really don't see how he's gonna get the fibre cables into the house...we have solid concrete floors and solid block walls ...unless they just run them to the junction box in the street ...sorry I'm showing my ignorance here .

Ultrafast comes in two different flavours.

G.fast uses the existing copper phone line into the property to a new master socket faceplate, and injects an ultrafast signal into the line from a local 'pod' external to the property (but within a few hundred metres).

FTTP absolutely requires optical cable all the way inside the property where it ends at an ONT (optical network terminator) - part of the installation is drilling (where required) to get the optical cable in.

Sky typically aren't very clear about which version will be supplied: it depends on the local Openreach infrastructure.  One clue is that 150Mbs can be delivered over either, but 500Mbs is only available on FTTP.

Civils install usually means the building contractor has had the civils team install the network terminal . However the notes "new ont may be ordered suggest otherwise Do you have a large white wall mounted openreach fibre optic modem hidden away in a closet or storage room etc.?

No ..no big box ...just the open reach box on the wall were the phone line plugs into ..a Mk3 .

Normally the first visit would be to drop or duct the fibre to the premises . A second visit is required to install the ont . However with 1 stage install meaning the fibre is already close to the house they may do both on the same day
