New Router for FTTC

I'm looking at getting a new router, currently have FTTC but want to upgrade probably to the 150mb FTTP when it becomes available. Am i right in thinking a modem/router combo won't work with FTTP?

Should  i dig out my old fibre modem to use now and grab a wireless router only like the ASUS models?

If you have the echolife hg6?? then you can use that to bridge your fttc connection to your chosen router

I am not saying that a asus dsl ax82u wont work its just the dsl modem bit becomes excess baggage and you may be limited to authenticating via dhcpv6 pd as it is not compatible with asus merlin firmware

Stick with the echolife and go for an asus rt ax model

Further to my posts the dsl modem routers that do function with sky via dhcp option 61 do so using their own dsl modems and not when bridged to the ont.

If you are finding you existing dsl modem long in the tooth you could try

Instructions for setting up tp link td w9970 as modem bridge

select sky vdsl from isp list

Re: New Router for FTTC

The modem i have is a white BT one that i was given by sky when FTTC first arrived, can't find it just now but i know its not the Huewei one. Am i right in thinking that I would get given a new modem when getting FTTP ?

@dibdab

You'll get an Openreach ONT with FTTP. Any router with a WAN port can connect to it, it needs to be able to authenticate via DHCP option 61 though as per Sky's requirements.

With fttp you get a fibre ont modem but you will have to source a cheap fttc vdsl modem as an interim measure . The tp link mentioned is £35

Re: New Router for FTTC

 If the ECI B focus V-2 doesn't work i'll get the one you mentioned. I guess i can get it second hand or sell it when i'm done with it.

Re: New Router for FTTC

ok so looking at the ASUS routers the ASUS RT-AX58U looks like the one to get, i assume these have solid wifi as kids are constantly asking if i've turned the wi fi off when on there phones as the sky router seems to drop the connection, though it still says it's connected. Need to turn the wifi on the phone of and on again.

Also i like to turn the wifi off at night i assume i need to log back into the router via web browser to do that just like i do currently?

Thats the one i went for (still to set it up) the ax 58 and above come with aiprotection pro and full parental controls. You should be able to set up usage rules that include limiting access times so you don't have to do it every night

@mae-3

Just a query with dual band wifi 6 i am assuming if you have one wifi 6 device and on wifi 5 that you'd have to run the wifi 6 device at wifi 5 frequencies. Unlike the xt8 which appears to have dedicated bands for 5ghz wifi 5 and wifi 6

Absolutely it is a fully functionally advanced parental control. Advise you download the full rt ax58u user guide (136 pages) for the full instructions on the other functions
