Netfix dolby atmos on sky q box

Hi

I have bought and new soundbar and 4k tv and I'm curious why Netflix does not seem to light the dolby Atmos light on showpiecer ?

I have connected the hdmi out of the soundbar to the TV and the sky box to the other hdmi input on the TV as my TV supports earc I assumed this would pass through the sound as streamed by the aky q box.

My dvd player is connected to the hdmi in on the soundbar.

When I play snowpeircer via the TV app it activates the dolby atmos light on the soundbar but playing the same through the sky netflix app no dolby atmos

Should I connect the box differently so it works through the soundbar it is a Sony ht- x8500 or is this feature not supported through the sky q box its an early 1tb box so it also does not support 4k I'm told ?.

hi @btree+mike I don't have Netflix so I can't confirm but I think that the Netflix App on SKY Q does not currently support Dolby Atmos.

I am confident that the Disney + app on SKY Q doesn't either. 

I think that the Amazon Prime App does (however Amazon seems to have very limited Atmos content)

Check this link - if it is the 32Cxx box then no it doesn't support UHD & I don't think it does Atmos - SKY themselves only have Atmos on (some) 4K/UHD content

The Disney+ app doesn't support Atmos, maybe one day but that will the up to Disney to provide a version of the the app the supports it. Netflix doesn't either and probably never will because Q doesn't natively process the Atmos metadata  which is a Netflix requirement.

Sky's current marketing is 'All your TV. All your apps. Entertainment made easy.'

That's the key thing - they want it to be easy, not necessarily the best quality. Sky Q is a mass market product for providing as much content as possible, not a high-end A/V device. If you want better sound and vision then you need to look to an Apple TV 4K box or an NVidia Shield TV box. They can provide you with Netflix, Disney+, Prime and other apps with Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision, frame rate matching and such like... but at a cost.

So how does the Sky Q Prime video app manage it?  Dolby Digital Plus is one of the of the ways Dolby provides to carry Atmos metadata which Sky Q can use.  It is more likely that Netflix has exclusive deals with other providers to carry Atmos, such as Apple TV 4K.

4k FireTv  Stick does Dolby Atmos Dolby Vision £50.00

If your tv does Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos just install the relevant apps on your tv without the need on splashing out on overpriced 4K tv boxes like Apple TV and Nvidia Shield.

Apple TV app on your tv gives you access to Appletv+ without the need to purchase the box

The Apple TV app does indeed give you access to Apple TV+ content but it does not give you access to iTunes Extras - all the bonus content you get with many movies purchased via iTunes. The Apple TV 4K box also gives higher bit-rates than the app and proper frame rate matching. Many TV apps are locked to 60Hz - the box on the other hand outputs movies and Apple TV+ shows at true 24fps when they have been shot that way. 

It may seem over-priced to some people but for others it's worth the expense. The user interface, speed, reliability, image and sound quality on the ATV 4K box is, to me, superior to the 4K Firestick (which you can get for £25 on Prime Day BTW). 

Dolby Atmos will also only work on Prime Video and Disney+ on the 4K Firestick - Netflix isn't currently supported.

Thanks for answers I am trying the same experiment on the prime app but so far I have not found anything that lights the dolby atmos light on the soundbar either direct through the prime app or via the sky prime app do you know of a title on prime that is  dolby atmos ?.

Carnival Row  - it has an Atmos soundtrack on Prime.

Thank you I tried "carnival Row" and it gave the same result as "snowpiercer" on netflix

atmos is activated via the TV app but not the sky app.

I swapped the sky box hdmi lead from the non earc hdmi on the TV to the soundbar hdmi in the only difference this made was change the source name so I guess it is the sky box.

The hdmi out on the soundbar is connected to the TV via the arc hdmi which I'm told is the correct way to have it.

I guess I will have to change my future film purchases as it seems that the only way to get the full benefit of my new toys is to get my films directly from amazon/netflix as it also appears that I cannot install or view  via the built in browser the sky store app on my TV and attempts to cast this from my phone have failed. 

The all in one solution seems to have been superceded by the TV itself which is a shame because I did like having my film library in one place..

hi @btree+mike can I just check which SKY Q box you have -

As mentioned earlier if you have Hardware version 32cxxx (Settings - System info ) then I suspect it doesn't support Atmos
