Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

I've had Q160 for over a week now and all seems fine but recording "the Big Bang theory" on E4 HD and the sound cuts outs, and yes if I go back and play that part again yes it's still there, has anyone else had this sort of issue.

If the sound dropout has been recorded then it's most likely a broadcast issue rather than the box.

At least he won't have to wait long for a repeat of a Big Bang Theory episode 😀

Oh yes, sometimes lasting 20 seconds - and definitely linked to Q160 as I never experienced these embedded glitches in the previous 18 months. I get them on live view and on recordings, across different channels but especially ITV and Ch4. It's not a wifi thing as my gigabit fibre network is all hardwired and delivers 10 times stronger/faster network than my V3 box and two Minis can accept. Engineer due here later today.

Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

FWIW, maybe sound glitches are part and parcel of the more advanced audio technology and the kit being used? I mention this because last night I was watching Home Before Dark on my Sony Bravia's Apple TV in-built app with audio being output to my Sony sound bar via the TV's eARC HDMI port. When I selected to Skip Intro  the show started playing without any audio at all! I had to re-wind and repeat to get the audio to play. This show is in Dolby ATMOS too. So, it isn't just Sky that has issues with audio from time to time. And I've been watching many Apple TV shows with Dolby ATMOS without this happening before. (Was this a Sony issue? Apple TV issue? User error?)

Just thought I'd mention this....

No issues with dropouts now on Q160. However i find that i need even more volume for uhd broadcasts compared to the HD broadcast. Theres not enough sound on UHD

@blade+the

That's really strange.
I have noticed a much better "quality" of sound since Q160. Admittedly I'm running a good AV and full Atmos 7.1 speaker system. But for me the sound has really improved - I was fortunate in being one of the early people it was released to, and when I made that "improvement" observation on this forum a number of people agreed that the sound was improved. It was "fuller" and more "present".
I'm surprised you're not experiencing the same. What's your setup?

@blade+the

I should add, though, that Apple TV's sound output is still the best of all of them. And I find running Netflix through the Smart TV or via Apple TV is far far better than via Sky Q

@Q-tips Just because you have a gigabit network all wired up does not mean there wont be issues, also with the new AX 6E routers you can exceed Ethernet speeds (4.8Gbps) on 5Ghz and over 1. 2GBps on 24Ghz let alone the new 6Ghz which adds 1200MHz of spectrum so no DFS channels to use as long as your equipment can support it of course untill then wired is good but not really needed needed for everything, smart TV's generally only have 100Mbps Ethernet ports because 4K does not need more than that so even a wifi 5 router will be faster than Ethernet in that scenario.

 Sky will only allow you to pull down recordings at a certain rate, if everyone could do it at Gigabit speeds it would swamp their servers, also what is your bufferbloat like? You really want to test a single stream for video streaming, not a multi stream test, try Thinkboadbands test which is both single then multii and see, (should be good with fibre) but the backhaul of the ISP can run hot and reduce speeds, also do they throttle or traffic shape?

 What router are you using, as some won't go much over 740Mbps to 850Mbps WAN to LAN. You need to look on a site like smallnetbuilder and see which models have the best Wan to Lan throughput so you are getting as much as you can from a connection like that, at least you will never saturate it, well not yet hopefully.

Damned if you do, damned if you dont

one comment there I'd disagree with - I don't think everyone having gigabit connections would swamp their servers - in the aggregate you'd have far fewer connections in parallel because each one would be connected and downloading for far less time. Unless a big new title was released everyone wanted at 7pm on a Friday night. 😃

Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

I received the update couple days back. Can't say I've noticed any cut outs yet.

@notagain what ethernet gives me is speed and consistency, aka TheHoly Grail. My fibre connection is not contended so I get pretty much the same results from various speed tests, time after time. And I never have any issues watching Netflix or Prime via my TV apps, or viewing 4K videos on Youtube, or watching the live stream from a 4K CCTV camera. My issues are certainly related to the SkyQ service or Sky hardware. FWIW, here's the results of today's Thinkbroadband test:

I should add that I have also tried running SkyQ on wi-fi (which varies between 200Mbps and 600Mbps around my house but is over 400Mbps in the vicinity of both Minis - but typically more variable than the ethernet throughput) and I get exactly the same glitches.  And I get the same glitches when only the Mini I'm watching is active, no downloads are occurring and network activity elsewhere in the house is negligible.
