@CybrHwk

No, that's not good. The 1080i solution should still work but clearly shouldn't be necessary, and clearly not just older Samsungs. (Mine was a Samsung.)

Incidentally, I use HDMI4 for Sky Q on my 2020 Samsung QLED, if that's worth a try? It's the port that's HDMI 2.1 - not that Sky Q uses that, but that port works very well for my box. Might be worth you trying that.

@CybrHwk  ah! now I understand, so if you screen is new chances are there's an update for it I'm sure, on the other hand if your screen is "let say over 2-3 years old" then chances are it may never HDMI handshake correctly, but there is a 3rd option make out the TV is failing and slip the idea of a new screen in conversation with your significant other, some good deals out there at the moment 😂😂

You need to use the eARC/ARC socket in most cases, I'd have thought?

eARC/ARC should not really be used for SKy -

The ARC (Audio Return Channel) enabled HDMI is intended for use with a Sound bar or AV Amp (i.e. to send Sound out from TV) so using it for an input only device  is not advised

@nigea99  Sorry, I was being lazy when I wrote that. I meant via an AVR.

@CybrHwk just had a quick look on Samsung page reg your screen and there are some firmware updates, but I'm sure your set may have them already but in case it didn't here's the link if it helps!

So, having read more about what's in Q160, it hasn't solved sound and/or picture drop outs on non recordings which is the main issue I'm seeing. I get a burst of 4-5 of them in quick succession when it's first switched on then it's fine from then on

Recordings/downloads wise, it does seem to be fixed but it does seem like the live issues are worse

As you say Q160 doesn't address audio/video issues on live TV as this is apparently going to be looked at on a per channel basis as it doesn't affect all channels.

On the channels I watch live the most, I get audio dropouts on BBC, ITV, Sky News and Sky One in most cases up to 10 per hour but I can watch 5 hours of Premier Sports 1 and 2 and not have a single dropout.

Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

@picasso10 Thanks. Yeah my TV came with the latest firmware already installed. I still maintain the source of the issues is the Sky Q box as my Fire TV 4k has no black screen or audio drop outs what so ever and is always running in 4k/Dolby Digital Plus mode at all times. I doubt they are doing anything specific for my TV and if they are kudos to their engineering department

I don't watch huge amounts of live TV as I download the UHD version of movies and shows but let's be honest being years into the Sky Q platform basic issues like audio dropouts and black screen issues should have been fixed years ago

I've not seen many reports at all of black screen issues though - it's only been audio dropouts which users have been suffering and which Q150 & Q160 had fixes for.

Which suggests it's most likely something in your enviroment. Either a faulty box, TV, cable or something weird in the software on one of them.

What cable are you using for the Q box connection? And have you tried swapping the Fire TV and Q HDMI connections over?

Sky did tout Q160 as a fix for pixellation glitches on both live programmes and recordings. What it has done is make my pixellation issues bigger (full screen instead of the previous narrow horizontal band of distortion) and maybe a little less frequent (2-3 per night instead of 2-3 per hour).

Example below is from BBC1's Paul McCartney interview late last night which I watched live.

Oh dearOh dear

--------------------
32B12C 2TB UHD Q box • Mini boxes x2 (32D0B2) • 2022 LG C2 OLED TV • Software vQ230.000.14.00L • Gigaclear gigabit FTTH broadband (935Mbps up/down) • Linksys Velop tri-band router; 3 mesh nodes • All Q boxes fully Cat6 hardwired • Q wi-fi disabled • Q picture/audio processing disabled (no sound bar) • Pixellation cured by Q170 but back again with Q190 and now every few minutes with Q210 and Q220 live broadcasts and recordings on all boxes

Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

@simon194On those channels I have no dropouts at all since the beta, its  weird you are getting them, unless you have interference or the box has got an issue it should work fine, I would contact Sky as most people are very happy with the fix thats in place with Q160, hope you get a resolution.

Damned if you do, damned if you dont

If you rewind, does the pixellation repeat too?

Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

I dont get a burst of them either, I wonder how much this is down to equipment, mines set to 10 bit 2160p and my TV has had updates up to this year (Sony AF8 Oled) and all the HDMI ports support HDCP 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3. I guess like windows Sky cannot code for every conceivable mix of equipment, but still that should not be happening I would have thought.

No, it's never there on rewind (whether live or recorded). If you are wondering how I filmed it, I now have a CCTV camera recording the TV screen whenever it is on.

Also, I don't think the pixellation affects the UHD box and attached 4K TV, although it hasn't been possible to test it since Q160 arrived. All my glitches are in 2K when watching either of my Mini feeds.

Re: HDR v3 box not fit for purpose (sound cutting out)

Sky engineer (my third) now booked for Thursday. Having tested/checked/replaced almost everything the last time and found nothing wrong, they might anyway replace my satellite cable which is 20 years old. If that doesn't work, they'll replace my Minis. And if that doesn't work, I'll jump off a bridge.

FWIW, a couple of Youtube links to recent pixellation events which at least I will be able to show to the engineer:
