General Questions Around Sky Q - New Subscriber

hi everyone, I hope you can help.

I've recently signed up to replace my Sky+ service with Sky Q - the engineer is due to install the system next week, 18th June.

I've received a Sky Hub device but not opened it up yet. When I signed up to Q the Hub wasn't mentioned so I'm not 100% sure what it does.

Does it replace my current Sky router or will I still use that? I guess that if it does replace my current router then I'll need to reconnect all my other devices - laptop, phone, tablet etc.

Does the router need to be installed, up and running before the engineer arrives to install the Q system?

Anything I might need to know? I get a bit edgy when I have to set up new tech, I'm not the most tech savvy person in the world, just need a bit of reassurance really.

Thanks

@bigsnitch2  The Hub replaces your current broadband router, so yes you can plug it in now & use it, Sky Q uses that hub to connect to for On demand & app within Sky Q, the engineer will set everything up when he arrives. But right now you can use the new hub.

Bare in mind it will have a new wifi id so any devices you currently use will need to be connected to the new hub, also the new hub broadcasts using 2.4ghz (the old standard wifi frequency) & 5ghz which offers faster connection speeds to devices that can support it.

Like you I'm a customer here, Sky Employees are clearly identified as such.

The  Q router is required for Sky Broadband and Q

Yes it replaces your current router

Does the router need to be installed, up and running before the engineer arrives to install the Q system?

You can install it before and will speed up your Q installation

@bigsnitch2  I don't know if you can with Sky hub/routers but I always change the WiFi name/password on my new router to be the same as the old one that way phones and other things like tablets don't need their settings changed.

@bob1234 ,

thanks for your reply. I'm not sure about changing the router name or password, it's got a sticker underneath it with the name and password already on it,

@bigsnitch2 Has Sky activated the Broadband, usually the date will be on the router box. If it's today or before, you're good to go.
