FUll Fibre install

Hi

Quick question thinking about having full fibre installed but when we had fibre installed we had the master socket moved to an upstairs bedroom the other side of the house which we use as an office. i then hardwired the lounge from there via a switch. So what are the chances of getting all the equipment installed in the upstairs room considering that the cable entry is downstairs in the dining room which is the other side of the house?

With fttp the mastersocket is redundant . You get one of these instead

and it will be installed up to 10 metres from where the fibre enters the property which may or may not be where the phone line enters

Sky Stream , Sky Superfast, SR203 router, Tp link td w9970 + Asus RT AX58U (backup), Xbox Series X, google home mini, LG 55 inch uhd tv, with Dolbyvision, samsung a5 2017 and samsung s21

If I get it right mark as answered

Re: FUll Fibre install

Ok

Well thats not good as the fibre will enter in the same place as the phone line as it piped underground. And 10 metres will not get it anywhere near where i need it.

But thanks for the reply.

A lot really depend on the Openreach engineer because the pre-terminated fibre comes in 10m lengths for standard installs or 30m lengths for premium installs. Sky don't offer premium installs.

For my install he was quite happy to do a 17m run from the splice point at the front of the house to where the ONT was going to be located at the back. He did joke that it was a bit of a PITA feeding 30 metres of fibre through a hole in the wall.  😀

Re: FUll Fibre install

OK well I have spoke to sky via chat and was told it won't be a problem so install booked for 31st March. Let's see if he is happy to take cable up and through the wall into the loft right across the loft then through the ceiling into cupboard then through wall to where the current master socket is. If it all goes well I assume I can still use my current network switch that distributes the signal to the lounge?

Realistically in the absence of detailed knowledge of the relevant Openreach safe working practices a Sky support person shouldn't be making promises about what Openreach personnel will be prepared to do, particularly if it involves entering unconverted loft space (which a Sky satellite installer would be forbidden from setting foot in).

That sounds way outside a 'standard' FTTP installation, which is what Sky are paying Openreach to carry out, and probably exceeds even a generous interpretation of the 'premium' option too (which ISPs usually don't offer anyway).

OK well will see what happens its more than 10mtr but less than 30 mtr. I did explain the problems but at no point did he mention the 10mtr limit. I am happy to do the loft part if the open reach chap is happy.

You can't (and shouldn't) be expected to run Openreach fibre for them: it's their national network all the way up to the ONT and civilians aren't supposed to lay a finger on it.  If you fell through your own ceiling with their cable in your hands the lawyers would be flocking before you hit the floor.

Personally I'd suggest you let them put the ONT where they will and then run your own ethernet cable to its ethernet port, with the WAN port of the Sky Broadband Hub (or your own router) at the other end before any switching.

I did explain the problems but at no point did he mention the 10mtr limit.

Unfortunately (and having been there myself) script-readers in contact centres are very unlikely to know such things from their own training unless they choose to take an additional interest and do their own research.

I'd agree with @TimmyBGood and be cautious to what you belive from Sky support. They dont really know the layout of your home at all and Openreach, depending on what sort of mood the engineer is in, likely will avoid any extra work outside of their standard install practices.

Your best option is likely to ask for the ONT to be installed as close as Openreach will agree to your office then do the rest of the run via Cat6 ethernet from the ONT.

Re: FUll Fibre install

Ok well full fibre installed but not where i wanted it but was kind of expecting it after the replies on here. So i have now bought some cat 6 cable which i will run from the dining room to the upstairs office will put network socket where bt socket was so will look neater than just a cable going through the wall. The big question is can i replace what was the master socket in the upstairs office with a moduler socket that has network and phone module in it as want to keep it as neat as possible?

Re: FUll Fibre install

Forget the above as just remebered the phone line will no longer work so just a network socket each end will be fine . Can someone just confirm that the phone line should no longer work?

Typically when Sky provide FTTP they've purchased a  wholesale service without any PSTN provision.  Voice calling is via Sky Talk using VOIP from the 'phone' socket on the rear of the Hub: in theory you could extend from this in parallel with the ethernet cable.
