Connecting a device via ethernet cable

Hi,

I need to connect a device to my hub via ethernet cable, the device can't be connected wirelessly. However, my hub is too far away from where the device needs to be located in the house. I notice there is an ethernet port on the back of the Sky Q box. Can this port be used to connected a device that requires internet, or is it only to connect the Q box to the hub via ethernet rather than wirelessly?

Thanks,

Anthony

@ant550lag yes the device can be connected to the ethernet port on your Q box but speeds will be limited to the wifi speed that box receives and when the TV box is in use the connection speed will be reduced yet further.

A better solution if the device needs a lot of bandwidth like a PC is to buy a powerline kit which uses your mains wiiring to carrybthecdata.

Re: Connecting a device via ethernet cable

Thanks Chris.

I don't think it needs a lot of bandwidth. Its a hub for a smart cat flap (Sureflap hub)

As long as its connected to the internet I think it will be fine.

I just wanted to check the port on the Sky Q box could be used in that way, as a relay for the internet connection.

Thanks

@ant550lag err no thst should be fine for bandwidth. The Q boxes can act as a wifi to ethernet bridge.

Not thought of connecting my cat door to the internet bit worried what the owner might order not keen on bulk rodent deliveries.😀

Well you learn something new everyday ....

I always assumed the LAN port on the Sky box was purely to give the Sky box a wired internet connection rather than wireless one.

@smudgester That is the primary reason yes, but it can also be used backwards as you've now discovered 😂
