Can I wait to transfer a Number?

Hi, Currently my main number is tangled up in a contract with 02. The device I had with them is paid off but my airtime plan has another month or two left on it till my numbers free. I'm wanting to start a new contract with sky and eventually transfer my main number. Will I need to transfer this number when I start the contract or can I transfer the number later down the line and switch it when its freed up?

@Nautix  You should be able to transfer the number anytime.
