Just for clarification the Apple TV+ app only gives you access to Apple TV+ content and not access to any iTunes purchases.

Be aware that it's the Apple TV+ app that's coming today, not the Apple TV app (without the +) that you get on some smart TVs.
It only gives you access to Apple TV+ content and not access to any iTunes purchases.

Yes, really.
There are 2 different Apple TV apps.
Apple TV is available on my Samsung Smart TV and Amazon Firestick for example - it offers Apple TV+ content and access to iTunes purchases.
Apple TV+ is available on my Panasonic Smart TV and some LG TVs - it offers Apple TV+ content only.
It is Apple TV+ that is coming to Sky, so Apple TV+ content only.

Will it definitely appear today and, if so, will it just appear on the homescreen or will it require a software update?

Excellent! only one app down now before I can go to a fully 100% one product solutions (sadly the final app will never be on sky Plex).

Many said Amazon Prime would never be on there. There is a site on the forums whereby you can make suggestions. Why not chuck the idea up there and see what happens?

@Joe-Bow I'm actually going to do that! thanks.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreI find it interesting that Apple TV + app only instead of the full Apple TV app.
Most say it's due to sky losing revenue on sales of films etc. but Amazon is available in its entirety allowing purchase of films and shows so can't be that reason.

@Joe-Bowadded it but not sure where it went, something happened as I got a badge lol

They'll probably try to see if it would be detrimental to Sky first of all then see how much interest there would be in it, but if you don't ask to don't get.
Good luck 🤞
Edit: I can see it there now @Anonymous
