Scam call

Ive just had a call to say sky are reducing my bill by 40% and sending me a hamper. Sounded legit to start so gave some details but when it started mentioning tablets and hampers it started to sound less legitimate. Have I been scammed

It's a scam. Hopefully you hung up before giving out too much information.

 

Scammers try to obtain sufficient information to be able to order expensive mobile devices in your name which Sky innocently deliver to you.

 

The scammers would then recontact you (again claiming to be Sky) saying they have made a mistake and for you to send it to a (non Sky) address. If you did that they then have the device and you have the bill.

 

They are very cunning. They may send packaging to post the item (to them) or might even send a 'courier' to collect it. see this link

With any calls from 'Sky' (especially unexpected calls) if the caller asks for your previously agreed telephone password to confirm you're the account holder (which I would expect a genuine Sky agent to do) initially give an INCORRECT one on purpose. If the caller doesn't challenge it then you know it will be a scam call.

They got my name address and email before I started to smell a rat. No passwords thankfully and I made an excuse and rang off. They sounded so plausible. It was only the free gift that made me suspicious. Up to that point they sounded very legitimate

You have been sacmmed so no matter what you do you need to make sure if they haven't already that they have not have had acecss to your account so start by changing the password:

Keep an eye on your bank account for suspicious payments and if anything appears call your bank to dispute it as soon as you can.

...unless your account was already compromised*.

 

In this case they can see what's on your account (to gain 'authenticy' to trick you) and then order items without having any financial particulars.

 

The end of the scam is pressuring you to return 'incorrect' items.  They have the item, you have the bill.

 

*  possibly by reusing passwords from other compromised sites

I am just another Sky customer and my views are my own even if you don't like the answers
