Old tennat

So the person that lived in my current address has a debt with sky. My new neighbour informed me today that the person that lived here has a massive debt with sky and it has now been moved over to the debt collectors. They havent told sky they have moved or given a forward address so now im worried debt collectors will turn up on my door! I plan on calling sky to double check this wont happen as I've told them we now live here but it's not going to stop me worrying. If they have a debt with sky, they could have others!

@Chelsea61

Do you not have an official form of ID with your surname on like a passport, driving licence or credit card so should debit collectors turn up they can see that it isn't you they are looking for. I'm sure they have come across situations like this before where someone they are after  has moved on.

@Chelsea61 it's not the address that a debt collector will be looking for. It's the person, regardless of where they live. If they turn up at your door, just tell them the debtor has moved away. Having suitable id handy would be a good idea. It's something a debt collector will be well used to. I'm not sure there's any point in calling Sky. I doubt they'll be able to act on what you tell them.

Sky will not liase with you. We rented property and a tenant left abruptly. Me trying to do the right thing tried to call and inform Sky of his forwarding address and they wouldn't speak to me as I wasn't the account holder. Their loss really, he probably never did pay up.

Hi @Chelsea61   It is important that you don't open any correspondence addressed to the old tenant, perhaps make a note of the return address so you can write to them, and then simply mark the correspondence as "Not known at this address" and pop it back into a postbox.

As on a previous post they are only interested in that person the debt collectors do turnup at your door as previously said on here just tell them them that the previous  occupants have moved and you have taken over the property. If. You have ID so much the better, but dont worry if you don't, they should  accept the fact that and leave. However if they persist just perlitely tell them to leave and close the door. They have no authority to do any thing else.
