Newbie here and need advice.
Around 15 years ago I set up sky at my parents house. Normal package sports movies etc.
My brother who live at my parents paid the monthly bill. Recently we have been looking at changing from our old sky plus to something new. I had a lot of trouble getting back online due to the age of the account and me not living with my parents anymore. So I phoned up sky and got my access back.
to my horror sky had been charging my brother £124.50 for the out dated sky package.
ive recently tried to solve the issue but its always with on online assistant who just go over and over the same thing again and just tell you that you need to upgrade which I already know.
so my main question is, should sky be allowed to charge that much for an old package when the new packages are so much cheaper?
shouldn't they contact us and let us know these things ?

They are allowed to do so: successive UK governments have seen fit to only give Ofcom very limited powers to regulate the pricing of subscription television. Whether they should be is rather different

Notifying a subscriber about the end of a discount may well not have been a requirement at the time: it is now.

If you have not contacted Sky for a very long time any minimum term discounts ran out a long time ago and you are on just monthly rolling contract paying the full list price which unfortunately can be as high of you have quoted. What you are seeing on line are prices for new customers which are given very large discounts as insensitive to join Sky . Also they are oni internet system call Sky stream which I will tell you in minute is nothing like the Sky system that your parents have. And present Sky subscription on monthly rolling contract which is what are probably on are just as expensive to exsisting customs as the old subscription your parents on, as mos of the element of new satellite tv packages have same things in it as your parents old package, ie Sky sports and Sky movies which are in your parents old package will be the same in the latest packages with all the same same channels they presently have , only the entertainment subscription now called signature will be slightly different but many of the channels in that subscription will be the same as what are parents are getting in there old subscription which may have some new channels depending what entertainment subscription they presently have.
sky box+ box is now well dated and no longer supported by sky. So I suggest to you give Sky a phone call, to get though the automated system just answer the questions but take no notice of it answer, it might try to send a texrt link, again ignore it. The final question will be is that all or word to that effect say "no" you will then be put though to human Sky agent who will be able to discuss having a new box ask for Sky Q as that is nearest thing to what your parents have now and Sky engineer will come and install it. If they ask if you would like Sky stream I think you should say no as that completely different thing to what parent have and works on internet, unlike your parents present system that get it signal from the dish on the outside of there property. Also it self install and no Sky engineer will visit to install it. You will also be able to discuss with the Sky agent getting new minimum term with discounts that will reduce the amount of your brother pays a bit. Unfortunately as a exsisting custom the discounts are not that great. Also you can discuss what items that are in your present subscription and may be if there is items there they don't realy use or need you don't need to have in your new subscription and that will also reduce the price. One final point having a new contract to get discounts you do normaly have sign up to a new 24 month minimum term as unfortunately if just opted a monthly contract the price would be Simlar to what your brother is paying now
one thing I have just noticed you say that your parents have a Sky+ box is that the Sky HD + box or very old very old sky + box. If it the latter do they actually watch Sky cinema and Sky sports these days as if they have the very old Sky+ box that was only capable of getting the channels in SD pictures quality. Sky sports and Sky cinema no longer have SD pictures quality channels and only now have HD picture quality channel which the old Sky + plus box is in capable of receiving therefore your parent would no longer be able to view Sky cinema or Sky sports on that box even though it is on there subscription and still paying for it.
