Advice re cancelling

Hi all,

Due to a recent sudden & unexpected change in circumstances I've found myself in a position whereby I now need to seriously cut back on my monthly outgoings with Sky being one area I need to make savings.

I've had discussions over the last couple of days with Sky surrounding both cancelling & any possible discounts they may be able to offer to see what my options are.

Currently I'm paying £129.99 for Tv, (Stream) broadband & mobile. The best offer that was put to me was a saving of around £23 off my Tv subscription, nothing else.

My Sky sim is out of contract next month & can be cancelled, saving £11.50 there. Broadband can also go even though mid contract as I'm exempt from early termination charges so can leave penalty free & save £43 there.

Where the problems start is with the TV side of things. Been quoted in the region of £290 to cancel as I'm in contract till 2028 & just re contracted back in February, this a new 24 month minimum term. I fully appreciate the penalty so to speak as I'm looking to leave only a few months into the new minimum term.

What I'm wondering is if I downgraded my TV subscription to the absolute bare minimum would that be considered re contracting again, meaning new minimum term again or would my existing contract from February still be valid even though the subscription or package has changed? My reasoning is that the cheaper package should hopefully reduce the cost of early termination charges?

Sky are saying no new minimum term or re contracting, existing contract remains valid but this is confusing me somewhat as when I made a change in February that prompted a new minimum term & cooling off period.

I appreciate everyone else here is just a customer also but if anyone can provide any advice on the above & how to proceed it would be appreciated.

Thanks all,

Steven

For the mobile and BB, I guess the prices quoted are what you're actually paying, if so then obviously you won't save the full amount as you'll still (presumably) need both.

For the mobile  check out any of the comparison sites and don't take the biggest data allowance if you don't need it, focus on cost. Don't forget that if you can't get a signal in your usual haunts then it's useless. Don't cancel it but ask for the PAC.

For the BB some companies will pay early termination fees anyway but if using the price rise as a reason to move (again, use the OTS to switch and don't just cancel) then make sure that they know that is the reason you're moving. Again, if switching focus on price and don't take the next level up just because it's only a couple of quid dearer. They will maybe give you a better deal on both when the PAC request and the OTS request hit them.

On the TV, you're snookered I'm afraid unless you have HD+ or Q as you can leave both due to the price rises (if you got an email, given you only re-contracted in Feb?).

If you are in a minimum term then it's in Skys court whether they would allow a new contract, it's very unlikely they would but you can't use that to enter a new cooling off period if that's your thinking. They would put you back on to the current (dearer) deal.

What you can do is remove any add-ons and rolling monthly stuff (or at least reduce them to Ad supported), although the usual 31 days notice would apply. In my case that would be (I think) the Ultimate TV pack (Netflix), the HD subscription, Disney+ and HBO. Your mileage may vary.

You are still in minium term for your tv but want to cut down your parts of your package, however you wil only be able to that parts of you package that are on rolling monthly contract if they are any. The parts of you package that form your minimum term and have discounts and  dates you will not be able to cancel unless Sky agree and there will be possibly be termination fee if they do. However you may be able to negotiate a bigger discount on some of these, however doing so may, liable  to new minimum term again

Thanks all for your input, think I'm just going to have to take the financial hit from the early termination charges. It's not ideal having just been made redundant but it is what it is.

I'll let you know the end result after the phone call has been made.
