Alan is a huge miss I think for reading the classified results on a Saturday. One of the highlights for me.
Myself and my Dad count the number of mistakes the random results reader makes when reading the results and it's on average about 8 mistakes not being able to read the correct team names out.
Bring back Alan I say.

Sky resorted to their third classified results reader on Saturday. Whoever it was was extremely monotonous.
They seem to be tacitly acknowledging that they've completely ballsed things up getting rid of Alan Lambourn, but I strongly suspect they'll never have the good grace to actually ask him to return.

It was actually Claire Tomlinson, who is a well established, well respected sports journalist of many years but, even she was very poor

I've stopped watching Soccer Saturday now Jeff and Alan are no longer part of the team.
Simon Thomas isn't a great replacement for me. I actually prefer Julian Warren who I think does a very good job and thought he would have been an automatic replacement for Jeff. I see Jeff is back on Amazon Prime tomorrow!
As for Alan Lambourn I'm not sure he can be replaced.

I didn't realise it was Claire Tomlinson who read the results on Saturday.
Why Sky decided to replace Alan Lambourn is beyond me, token box ticking exercise ?.
Totally agree re. Jules, he was the obvious successor to Jeff, he's always been very good when he does midweek Soccer Specials - Simon Thomas isn't a patch on him.

I wouldn't have thought it would be that difficult to teach an existing broadcaster the correct way to read the team names and the right intonation for the scores... but they've used (at least) four this season, including Simon Thomas himself, so it doesn't seem a priority for them to fix it!
Mike West on "the other side" is now the only competent "classifieds" reader left, given even the radio has abandoned the slot. I know we get all the scores on our phones etc. but it's still a Saturday tradition that needs saving...

I don't like to say this but I find it laughable how Sky keep 'wheeling out' a different female to read out the results every week, it's as though the reader has to be female in order to reflect their decision to dispense of Alan Lambourn's services, whereas if another male was reading the results then that would only undermine their decision to get rid of Alan.
I still watch the classified results on Sky, albeit usual for 'comedy' value generated by just how bad the person reading out the results is at the single role they're specfically there for. Announcing Newport 'Town' and Inverness 'CT' are two of the 'lowlights' thus far, whereas Alan Lambourn, when he occasionally ad-libbed a comment, was funny for the right reasons.
There's also still the slim hope within me that one Saturday afternoon just after 5pm Simon Thomas will say "and now over to Alan Lambourn for a classified check" but I suspect pigs might fly - after all we're talking about an organisation that gets rid of certain people very easily, such as Dean Windass (at a time when support would have been welcomed) and Glenn McCrory (who Sky deemed guilty before being proved wholly innocent of the most ridicuolous none offence, i.e. using the word 'pet'), yet was/is quite happy to retain a pundit who spat in the face of a child.

No idea how old he is but I'm guessing 70+, which they perhaps used as an excuse to show him the door, but could at least have given him a decent send-off (and got him to train his successor(s) in the job!)
Torn between watching to see who gets the thankless task each week, and switching over to BBC at 5pm. Failing that, there's an AI JAG account on Twitter (with permission of his family I believe), to (just about) hear the classified results as they used to sound!
I think Simon's generally OK but nobody could ever recapture the chemistry of Jeff and the old crew (I know, he did it twice with two generations, though I barely member the Marsh/Best etc. one.)

To just go back to my previous post, and to be fair to Sky, I forget they split with Glenn McCrory long before his recent legal case. But the fact Carragher pretty much got off spitting at a child because he is a bigger 'name' than other pundits will never sit well with me.
As you say Lambourn's departure should have been acknowledged/his contribution recognised. Don't get me wrong, he did make the odd mistake, as would anyone in that role, but his voice carried authority and was perfectly suited to the role. I might have to find that AI JAG account on Twitter, always used to enjoy listening to JAG reading out the results after being at a game. But I still wish Sky would swallow their pride and ask Lambourn back.
Not a fan of Thomas but as you say no-one else could be Jeff, although I always like Jules on midweek soccer specials. Funny, the days of the panel including the likes of Mullery, McLintock, Best and Marsh feel as though they were 40 years ago. I was too young to remember any of them playing but never had an issue with that when watching.
I think for me what stands out is that my (sadly now late) wife, who had little interest in football, knew who Jeff Stelling was, she'd ask what they were all laughing about, would sometimes laugh with them and she liked listening to Lambourn pronounce these Scottish clubs and places she'd never heard of, whereas I can't imagine her doing that with the current personnel.

Yeah, they're all just pretty nondescript really (Merson apart, but he's a fish out of water now), and it's now little different from Final Score or anything other channels might do (think BT/TNT scrapped theirs didn't they?) It's just information rather than the entertainment it used to be. Oh for a "Tommy Travelodge" or an "Eisa, proving a good investment" etc... sometimes when a scorer pops up I think of the puns Jeff might have come up with (though anyone else trying to imitate him would never have worked, so fair enough they don't attempt it.) And the force of nature that was Kammy, of course... unbelievable, Jeff!
Sky's loss of monopoly in recent years has diluted their coverage I think, a 'proper' Sunday Supplement is a big miss, and while Soccer AM was in decline for many years it's still left a big unfilled gap.

Just to clarify, I don't believe Alan Lambourn's age (albeit mature!) was taken into consideration when Sky decided to dispense with his vocal talents on a Saturday afternoon. We can only hope that someone at Sky will come to realise that it would be a good idea to reinstate Mr Lambourn to his Saturday afternoon slot! It was bad enough losing Jeff but to lose Alan as well is just too much.

Just training someone to do the job properly would be a start, it's not rocket surgery 😉 Charlotte Green on 5L was crap at first but got the hang of it. Anything beats a monotone 'Spurs. 3. Wolves. 2. Brighton. 4. Leicester. 1.' etc, where you can barely even tell which teams were playing each other without the aid of the visual...

Hallelujah. They've started 2025 with a proper reading of the results!
04 Jan 2025 05:16 PM
Strange that they now seem to have settled for Simon Thomas reading them himself though, after a revolving door of female voices in the early part of the season. Clare Tomlinson seemed to be at least starting to get the hang of it before going the same way as the others! The main presenter doing it still doesn't feel right.

Why not bring back Alan Lambourn? Nobody does it better and nobody ever will!
