Sky Atlantic missing HBO new series

As was predicted the move to HBO Max is likely to force customers to pay extra

The new highly acclaimed series Laterns is only being shown on the app and not Sky Atlantic

Thus means customers will need to upgrade their services to watch in 4K

I cannot find any information if this will be available to Sky customers eventually

hi @MikeN2

I think it is extremely unlikely.

With the launch of HBO Max in the UK (delayed in the UK due to the existing deal with SKY)  more & more content will be exclusive to their App.

Personally, I haven't studied the deal in detail so I don't know if such content may eventually be made available to SKY but I am fairly certain that if it is then it wouldn't be in UHD

I know this is not what SKY customers would like to hear but it is the realiity with the owners of content launching their own apps.

It is available to Sky customers but would require those on Q to upgrade to Ultimate TV, which includes HBO Max (standard with ads) and then pay an additional fee for HBO Max Premium to get it ad-free and in 4K.

Same for those on Sky Glass & Stream with Essential TV. They would need to upgrade to Ultimate TV and pay extra for HBO Max Premium.

This is due to the long term agreement between Sky and HBO coming to an end when HBO Max launched independently in the UK back in March. HBO have control of their own content again.

I forgot to mention, as I think you implied, & as detailed by @Angel_Aka that Lanterns (& other similar new content)  is available to most SKY customers due to the inclusion of the base with Ads subscription to HBO Max - although it does mean paying more to watch 'ad free' or in UHD.

Re: Sky Atlantic missing HBO new series

This is not news, considering the original press release

None of new HBO Original Documentaries have been on Sky Documentaries either or Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness not on Sky Comedy either, Youth won't be on Sky Comedy either.

So much so, several older HBO series have added to Prime aswell, as they can now make additional revenue from them (like they already did with WB series) e.g The Night Of , The Pacific , Band Of Brothers, True Blood, a cinemax series, Ballers and Sex and The City,

As Warner Bros Discovery Ltd stockholders* would presumably prefer.

* and Paramount Skydance are probably going to want a return on their 111 billion dollar investment going forward ; )

Re: Sky Atlantic missing HBO new series

So what exactly will Sky Atlantic contain?

is there any point in having the channel any longer

Re: Sky Atlantic missing HBO new series

Clearly they have other options, A24 Crystal Lake airing next month, aswell as Sky Original Drama 'War"

The Terror: Devil In Silver was also added recently alongside 1 and 2 (which left ITVX)

I do wonder if they ever considered rebranding the channel as "Sky Drama"

Re: Sky Atlantic missing HBO new series

Don't have the rights to reruns of GOT.

Although I wouldn't rule out reruns of other series , tomorrow is The Looming Tower from Legendary Television (although makes me wonder if the never released any form in the UK  - Debris will show up)

For Sky as whole , would make sense to add more other NBCU catalogue series

Unfortunately this is what happens when you sell out to Americans where the $$$$ is king and customers come a sorry second imo.

Re: Sky Atlantic missing HBO new series

Sky itself is American part of Comcast, soon NBC Universal

The non-renewal of the historical arrangement between HBO and Sky Atlantic would have happened whether or not Sky was acquired by Comcast*.  More recent executives at the merged Warner Bros Discovery were vocal about the Sky deal being a poor value return for exclusive access to HBO new releases and back catalogue.

* which itself could not have been prevented without UK Government intervention: as a publicly listed entity Sky Group was always available to a purchaser with sufficient resources.
