Germany - Q boxes - converted to Sky Stream

Interesting development in Germany.

Sky Germany are allowing customers to change from Sky Q to stream but changing the software to Sky OS on Sky Q boxes through an over the air software update. Effectively enabling a change for customer from satellite based offering to Sky Stream using the Sky Q box

@Jason+Golding  Gemrnay has had Sky Q over the internet for a while now, it was under the brand Sky Q IPTV, so they were already streaming boxes in all but name, it sounds like they are getting the Stream based OS rather that the Sky Q based OS.

Translated from the Sky.de website "

In just a few weeks, the time has come: Our customers with the  Sky Q IPTV Box will receive the free software upgrade to Sky Stream.

This will switch your Sky Q IPTV box to the latest user interface “overnight” with many exciting features and a new home screen.

Before the upgrade, each customer will receive written information about when the upgrade will take place and what to keep in mind. You can find all the important information about the software upgrade here."

Interesting. Does this effectively give them Stream with the ability to record locally?

@oj01  I'd of thought so, however unless i'm misreading the help FAQ's on that website it's looking like it's going to be disabled

As a Sky Q IPTV customer, how do I get the new Sky Stream remote control with the “Plus button”?

  • There is no need to replace the remote control.
  • The "R button" not used on Sky Q IPTV takes over the function of the "Plus button" after the software upgrade.

As mentioned above it is only the internet based Sky Q box in Germany that is switching to Sky Stream OS. Satellite based Sky Q like we have in the UK is not changing.

I think the next device from Sky should be like a Sky Q Stream device.

It would be basically be a mix of both Sky Q and Sky Stream. Something similar to Freeview with Internet, where digital and online channels exist in one EPG. But with Sky Q Stream, satellite and online channels would exist on the one EPG. This would also increase the flexibility of channels that are online only to be broadcast "to the masses".

At least when Sky eventually ends their contract (likely in early 2030s) with SES (the satellite owners), there would not need to be a new device. Also Sky could focus their entire attention on one device, making it the best that it could be. Sky Q, Sky Glass and Sky Stream could be like one device.

Services I use on Sky:
  • Sky Q in Ireland:
  • ︎Sky Signature, Sky Cinema, Sky HD, Paramount+, Discovery+ (Standard)
  • Sky Ultrafast Max (Fibre Internet)
  • Sky Talk (VoIP)
  • Sky Mobile
  • Disney+

Please treat everyone with respect. 🙂
