But it just being the 1 point in most scenarios would have little baring on the championship results. For it to actually have a baring it should be have been worth more points. Surely getting the fastest lap of the race should have been worth more points than the person finishing in 10th place.

There was an issue with the fastest lap point and that was the likes of Red Bull typically just pitting Perez with a few laps to go to put on new soft tyres in a bid to take the fastest lap point away from their competitors. Personally i always felt this ruined the entire reason for having the fastest lap point.
I think what really made the FIA look at the fastest lap was Daniel Ricciardo's last race where he pitted and took the fastest lap away from Lando Norris but as Ricciardo was out of the top 10 he didn't get a point for it and he was after all racing for red bulls sister team so thus stopping Norris getting what might have been (but in the end wasn't) a crucial point. I seem to remember Max thanking him for doing it on live TV
