the phone number we were allocated worked for 2 weeks but it has stopped connecting. There is still a dial tone but outgoing numbers are not recognised for some strange reason

When was your service activated?
Is your phone plugged into your broadband Hub?
Do you have a black Hub or white?
If it's black, is the 'Voice' LED on the front panel illuminated? Amber or green?
Are you able to receive calls?
