My Father in law has passed away, do I need to send back his sky HD box and remote

Sorry for your loss. 

You do not need to return Sky HD equipment, it is yours to keep or dispose of as you wish.

It is only Sky Q equipment that needs to be returned to Sky. 

You can return or recycle equipment free of charge with Sky using the info here:

Sorry for your loss. I've moved your post to the more apt Sky+ forum. No, Sky HD boxes do not need to be returned.

Outside the minimum contract the equipment becomes the property of the owner and does not need to be sent back to sky

You could sell it on Facebook or something similar, people are always looking for Sky boxes. My sister got her replacement box on Facebook for £10.
